VT got his parts for his 12v freightliner inframe from a place here in Calgary called Alberta Engine & parts. They work on a ton of 12v's for the patch, he got pistons, rings, mains and gaskets for a fraction of the price 403-720-3484, not sure if they would ship up there or not.http://www.albertaengine.com/

Go on compd and look up a guy named Snedge. He run Mamau Diesel, which is a Cummins shop. He knows his stuff, and I hear his prices are unbeatable. You might have to wait a bit while in transit, but it beats $2200.

FWIW, my 12v top end gasket kit was somewhere around $370 out of Cummins in Calgary.

Kev, I just doing this for fun thing to do to get my mind off work. Its fun to see a turbo that I had some part in actually work as I think that it should.

Dog, what kinda of screw compressor? I'm thinking that I want to use heat as I can calculate how much power and how efficent that the turbine is. Compressed air works, but the real work comes from the heat transfer from the turbine volute into and thru the turbine disk. A 1600 cfm turbo that pushes 50 to 60psi is alot of HP (work). My brain is mush right now but I would guess around 50 to 70hp. You can load up the turbo but only partially. You need to spin a turbo up to 80000+ rpms to real see what it does for work. I bet that Alamo air compressor on the turbine your only seeing around 20-30k in speed for the large frame turbos. I was thinking about using a propane burner and a larger cylinder (a combustor). I just have to figure out how I gonna get decent control with the fuel valve. Too much fuel you have fire

Gotcha.. I see its a total performance test. temp/ pressure drop across the turbine, not just compressor speed and flow. I was too much concerned with the compressor side.. A small jet engine would work, using the turbo as the PT..

I usually only see turbos up to the 50-60K range at the highest on industrial engines. The large LSV turbos I looked at only run about 13,500.

The garretts I have run from around 105k to 115k rpm, according to their compressor maps.

While the engine is out would it be worth it to throw in a set of main and rod bearings and a set of rings? I am assuming everything is fine with mine....... 300,000 kms on engine.

Its all apart, I would put in fresh stuff. How did the cylinders look? 300,000km for the motor isn't too bad. I would put in new bearings and rod bolts and mains studs as you are planning on abusing the heck out of the fresh engine. Wow $2200 sounds like a complete engine rebuild kit. You might want to put in a fresh oil pump as well. If your just doing a stock rebuild you can reuse the mains and rod bolts. I would have just had a fresh oring the head and left the engine in the truck and run her until it breaks. How much oil tarnish/muck is there inside? My engine looked good inside even after a half dozen head gasket pulls, three cylinder heads, five injection pumps, dozen or so turbos. You doing anything with the balance of the motor?

Also if its apart do part weight match the rods, pistons, rings. Find the lightest part and match everything else to that weight. Watch for burrs on the ring ends (you going with gapless rings)? I guess that I said a mouthfull

Eventually they would have to get to work, the stories would get old...
