What do I really need?

I am considering the purchase of a 2010 2500 diesel. My configuration would be an extended cab longbox like my 2003 2500 with a hemi.

I have 260,000 on that truck and it has been pretty much flawless. Only one set of ball joints and u-joints! One tranny flush and I keep care of it.

It is getting to the point though where I need to get something new for some of my long trips.

I tow a 3 place ski-doo trailer on occassion in winter. I tow a 20 foot boat in the summer and do lot's of stuff like dump runs and lumber runs around the farm in NW Ontario.

Do I really need a diesel? I have a 30 trailer but I never take it far.

I do a lot of regular hwy driving with no load. I live in a climate that often sees very cold temps. Anyway, I am getting some very good quotes on 2010 2500 trucks.

Any other things I should consider? Is a 1500 worth looking into......

Boy, that is a loaded question, do you "need" a diesel. If you're getting a good deal, I'd say go for it. If you have a place to plug it in really helps. If you're pulling lots and lots of time on the highway, then yes, if you're doing lots of short trips where it never gets up to operating temp, I'd say shy away. I do lots of short trips, but its always enough to warm it up. The new flashes really smartened things up. With 260 on the clock with a gasser, I'd say go for it.

The wife says go with the 2500 again. So that is solved. Not as nice a ride as the 1500 but it is a real man's truck. Now, deisel or gasser. She says go with a gasser. I'm not sure yet. It will see a lot of use and will be my only vehicle. Selling the 03 to a friend.

Anytime you tow, you're going to be doing one of two things:

1. Thanking yourself for owning a diesel.

2. Kicking yourself for not owning a diesel.


Making those lumber and dump runs will eat up extra gasoline, whereas with the diesel it won't be as extreme. Also pulling that 20 foot boat will mean you might as well have a Shell tanker truck follow you for pit stops.

One of my former supervisor's asked me about my trucks. I told him with my '03 3500 that I was getting 13 MPG before I traded it in for my '08, my '06 2500 was getting roughly 18 MPG, and my '08 3500 was getting a little over 15 MPG.

His '05 Dodge Ram 1500 was lucky to break double digits, normally getting about 9 MPG and towing a pair of jet skis dropped it to 5 to 7 MPG.

I am considering a similar vehicle .......Whereabouts in NW Ontario are you getting the very good quotes?

i think thats fine consideration. you just need not to follow other than 1500.
