I'm close to retirement, and want to be able to haul a gooseneck 3-4 horse LQ trailer
Truck is not a daily driver, mostly local hauling and hobby ranch chores. Around town is flat. Will be doing some hauling in the Sierras, other steep hills

Found this truck at a dealer..Input about this setup is APPRECIATED--

Aisen, 4.10, with auto level rear suspension and lots of bells and whistles which would make me happy

I DON"T like that it has the 5th wheel tow package with the big holes in the bed but i'm not sure if thats a dealbreaker or not

What do you think? I'd rather have a SW 6'4" bed but not sure it would work for the kind of trailer I want
and I'm not sure if want 3.73 or 4.10 rear end, and what about those air bags? I've heard that there are better aftermarket but these come installed on this truck...

What is the weight of the gooseneck horse trailer w/LQ??? Most of those style trailers can be quite heavy as far as pin weight on the ball is concerned.

The Aisin / 4.10 ratio is a great combination, and will give you max GCWR.

I've always heard a few complain that they have "too little" truck....but have never heard of anyone complaining they had "too much" truck.

I know of at least three people on other forums that have the factory rear air. The factory rear air exceeds their expectations, and they have had no issues with it, either.

Not saying towing isn't practical with a short bed.....but I'll bet you'll have a more comfortable towing experience with the long bed.

As for the factory tow prep group.....I've only heard a few instances where the factory drop in ball does not seat as tightly as say the B&W turnover ball.

Withou nowing the approximate loaded wieght of the trailer in question, no one can really give you much good advice. I have towed with both a single wheel 3500 and the dully that is in my sig. I have had 3.73 gearing in both, and unless you are really towing extremeyl heavy I don't thik 4.10's are necesary. Give us an approximate weigh and we can be more help.

looks like my setup would be similar to yours. It's reassuring to hear the stock equipment is good. I don't have the trailer yet and I'm not sure how big I will go. Trying to be ready for anything I guess. I'll do more homework on the trailer.
I'm torn on the 4.10, not sure I understand all the pros and cons.
it's mainly for towing horses so I'm not usually going more than 55-60.
Short Hauls around town seems like overkill. I have a. 4.10 now but they didn't have 3.73 s then. I haul about 9-10k now but it's just a bumper pull.
I'll do some homework on trailer weights

Re the hitch, does it require a factory ball? Is this from dodge?

If you are asking about the gooseneck hitch it will require a ball that is compatible with the gooseneck fifth wheel prep package (puck system). Iwoud recommend buying an aftermarket one, as I purchased the factory one and the safety chain hooks were too big to accomadate my safety chains on my gooseneck. These are what I bought. CURT Factory-Style Gooseneck Safety Chain Anchors for RAM #60617. i like the factory ball better than curts, buy I am sure curts would work just fine. I am very impressed with the towing capacity with 3.73 gears in my 15. It has so much more power than the 05 did.

If in doubt.....simply go with the best GCWR the first time. I've seen tooooo many people buy what they thought was an adequate tow rig for an RV only to "trade up" a few years later and run out of truck......
Since the AISIN has dual overdrives (5th and 6th gears) there's not much need to be concerned with a 4.10 equipped truck. In 6th gear, there's *maybe* 200---250 rpm difference at 65 mph between 3.73's and 4.10's. The 4.10's.....coupled with the much deeper 1st & 2nd gear ratios of the AISIN.....make for the best tow experience one can ask for.

Thanks, thats great news. Now the only thing I don't like on the truck is the 5th wheel pucks since I'm not getting one, but everything else is there so I think I can live with it.

I'm terrible at getting a "deal". The truck is configured at $71640. They are offering $7777 off msrp and $3500 rebates. Figure 10% taxes and fees. They want $950/mo with 8K down.(3%interest) They didn't specify but I'm planning 72 months. This makes the sales price about 67,200

I'm thinking that 5K down plus the $3500 rebates and $900/month would be a good deal for me. That makes the sales price $61,500.
Am I in the ballpark?

For $71,640......that truck sounds like a Longhorn. Most Laramies are about $5k or so less in MSRP.

No, I have a copy of the window sticker, hunted the truck down with the dealer. Not sure they could get it or not, it is at another dealer's quite a distance. It is definitely a laramie but it has leather seats,two tone paint,bed liner, side steps, bed lighting etc etc.

Its exactly what i want, but I'm not determined that I have to get it now. Just thinking the interest rates will probably go up, and the dealer cost doesn't go down. So if I can get a deal, and they can get the truck, I'll do it

If you haven't checked them out yet, I'd give Dave Smith Motors a call. Perhaps you might find a better deal. Just let them know exactly what you need. When we bought our truck, they were offering complementary flights into Idaho to buy a truck (we made a trade passing through). Not certain they are still doing it.
