mud flaps?

This question is likely too simple for most of you fire-breathing diesel jockeys out there -- but hopefully you will share some of your experience. I have a 2500HD on order and will use it this summer for a long trip through Alaska -- lots of road construction and gravel roads likely. I will be towing a travel trailer so I will need some good flaps of some kind to keep from sandblasting the front of the trailer (I assume). Is that a good item to get from the dealer, aftermarket (any suggestions), or should make them myself. Simpler is better of course. Any suggestions would be appreciated, it is 4x4 crew, short bed, if any of that makes any difference. If they look too ugly I can always take them off after a trip like this. thanks, Ed

I will second the duraflaps. I've got them on my truck and have been very pleased with them. Look at my pics. I've got a couple posted.

thanks guys, they look good, as soon as I get the truck and check a few measurements I will call duraflap and place the order-- nice pics, I was wondering about the stainless weights but after seeing your pictures I probably will go without -- I will keep stock wheels and tires so I guess the 12" wide will be sufficient. Also I didn't even consider front flaps so I will have to think about that. thks again, Ed

I would recommend front flaps as well. save a lot of chips on your lower door area on the truck

Front Flap Install

I wonder if I can get some help.

I got a set of 4 Cummins/Ram flaps awhile ago. I was able to install the rears by drilling through the flap and using the existing screws to hold it on. The front wheel well is blank and I really didn't want to drill into the metal if I didn't have to.

Any suggestions on how to install them?

To keep the rocks off the front of the our trailer, I built my own and it connects to the receiver. Its wider than the truck by about 4 inches on each side and there is only a 2 inch gap in the middle. Used very sturdy angle iron and good rubber OTR mud flaps turned sideways. Works REALLY well and cost me about $80.00 to make vs the $350 they want online.

Discount!

I ordered front and rear flaps for my new truck from duraflap (www.duraflap.com). They asked where I heard about them and when I said on this forum they gave me a 10% discount for being a forum member. Nice surprise. Ed

Mud Flaps

In 2003 when I ordered my dually I had the dealer to install front and rear mud guards (Dodge Ram). I really like them since they are flexible to a degree. I pulled a 30' Fiver to Alaska and you'll need more than mud guards to keep the rocks off the front of your trailer. Camper World and some others make one that attaches to your drawbar hitch. It covers a lot of territory.

By the way, check out your windshield coverage before you leave. More than likely you'll get a few pips in your windshield before you get back to British Columbia. It's a great trip. Watch out for the frost heaves, they're tough on your suspension and your trailer. Definitely not a road, especially the Yukon, for fast traveling.

Have a great trip.
