Adding keyless entry to ST model

Ok guys, there is a thread over in the 3rd gen area for adding keyless entry to a 2010 and up ST model with power locks, but without keyless entry (it would probably work on other trim levels too, but most of them come with keyless entry already). It's really easy to do with some programming and the fobiks. Hope this helps anyone who is in this situation. It works, I had mine done and couldn't believe how simple it was....neither could my local dealer. Good luck!

Warranty Fix of Key Fobs

When I took the truck in the other day to get the oil changed, they wanted to know if I happened to bring both key fobs with me, as there was a TSB or similar to reprogram the key fobs. I said I'd bring them both the next time - but then got to thinking that somewhere I read that the reprogram was to cure an ability to remove the key while the engine was running. But I think I also read that not all trucks had that error. I checked and I can't remove the key while it's running, so why would they still want to reprogram them?

I had that recall on my truck too. They checked mine and it was good. They didn't have to do anything with my key programming for that since there was nno problem. I guess if you have the problem, then they would need to reprogram them. Since I wanted to get the remote keyless entry turned on and needed to have that programmed as well, it kind of worked in my favor (since they were going to be in the programming anyway, I wasn't going to have to pay for the programming labor). My local dealership agreed to try turning the keyless entry on anyway since they were interested in being able to sell the upgrade to other customers who had asked about it. it didn't work the first time because the tech left out a step, but I took it back and he saw what he missed, he took care of it, and it worked great.

Sorry for my ignorance, but prior to the "upgrade", what did you do to unlock the doors? Did that odd "Mercedes key" (first mfr to use a key that didn't have the typical metal zigzag cuts to lift tumblers) unlock the door somehow, or did they have a second "old-style" key like we have for the tailgate that unlocked the doors?

It was what I would call a combination of the 2. The part that went into the locks (door and ignition) was the regular metal key. The part where it transitioned to the plastic "head" of the key was formed like the part of the FOBIK that you put in the ignition, then it had a hole for your keyring. That weird looking part that looks like the Mercedes key is where the chip is I guess. When I got the FOBIKS, I didn't have to change anything because the ignition lock was already formed like the Mercedes key. I hope all of that makes sense. it looks like this...http://www.autotransponder.com/2008_...chip_key__pod_ ....these were the keys that came with my truck....so i had to unlock the truck the old school manual way. At least I had power locks so we could just hit the buttons on the way out or unlock them after opening 1 door. My main reason for wanting keyless entry was that it was hard to fumble with things and try to find that door lock hole in the dark.

Thanks for the explain. The key for my Ram is a little different - the whole thing is plastic and only a short (half an inch) piece of the plastic enters the ignition. But the key for my '07 Nitro is more like the one pictured. My 300 has the key and fob-less entry where you only have to have the thing in your pocket - touch the handle and it unlocks if you're within five feet. Then if your foot is on the brake, you just push the start button and off you go, as long as that thing is in your pocket. Probably be putting that in the Rams soon...

what year and level is your truck? I have a 2011 2500 st with power locks. So If I'm understanding you right. adding keyless entry is a programming issue?

I just talked to my dealer and they are gonna try this on my 2011 ST. But i want to go one step further and get remote start, too. What extra programming needs to be done in addition to the keyless entry programming?

I ordered my 2010 2500 4x4 standard cab and the dealer told me that power locks were not available for an ST. The only reason I got the ST is I wanted a manual transmission with a manual transfer case. Were you able to get power door locks on an ST ?

Yes...you can order the ST with Customer Preferred Package 2FA "ST Popular Equipment Group"....mine came from the dealer with it already. This PKG gives you carpet, cloth seats, upraded radio, speed control, power windows and locks, and a few other items. If you got the base model ST, it will have the rubber floor mat, manual locks, etc. So when I looked for an ST (because I wanted the manual transfer case too), I looked for one that had the upgraded package. As I've gotten older I've grown to "need" power windows, locks, upgraded stereo, etc.
