07 to a 2014, is it worth it?

So, the truck has 191,000 miles on her. Tranny rebuilt, u-joints replaced as expected, shocks upgraded, #4 injector line replaced, 4 sets of tires, dent in the tailgate (dang trailer and tractor), driver side seat torn as most of them do and tie rods replaced. Otherwise nothing has gone wrong with her. Mods: CAI, Edge CTS, SMARTY usually at SW3 and exhaust updated errr....anyways you know.

Now, wife and I go look at 2014. She automatically likes the look of the new model and the interior. Gives me the ok to go ahead and update but I can't keep the 07. Her biggest concern is that I am driving from OK to FL this July with a trailer and she doesn't want me to break down.

Now I know that it may seem like a stupid question but I have put all but 4 of those miles on the 07. I like the new trucks but still leery of the 6.7s. So, what are the pros and cons (other than having a monthly payment on the new truck) of me going from the 07 5.9 to the 2014 6.7? I am currently getting 21.2 mpg and would like to stay in that area if possible. Oh and I will do a mega this time around. Lets hear them.

I went the other direction (but not because there is anything wrong with the 4th gens), so here's my take:

1. You won't have to do any mods to the 4th gen as it probably makes more power stock than your 2007. CAIs and exhaust don't seem to do much for the 4th gens. Just leave it be and enjoy the peace of mind a warranty brings.

2. 21 mpg is great, you probably won't quite get that from a 2014 but you'll have to buy DEF too.

3. The 4th gen ride, comfort and auto tranny choices are definitely superior than the 3rd gens, but that doesn't mean your 2007 is a bad truck by any means.

4. The other reason to go 4th gen is the crew cab, which is far bigger than the quad and has the same leg room as the Mega. You may not need the mega, or even want it, if you find a long bed more appealing.

5. If the payment is going to put a pinch on your finances then it definitely isn't worth it. Not to sound like Dave Ramsey here, but if it were me I would put the payment away in savings until you have about $3k-$4k saved up for future repairs on the 2007. If that didn't hurt, then either keep saving until you have enough to pay cash for the 2014 less what your 2007 is worth (guessing $19k) or go ahead and buy the 2014 and enjoy the warranty. I figure that's what the monthly payment is buying me.

Hope this helps.

Good advice above, but have to take issue with the MPG's on a 2014 (if we are talking highway). I get 22-23 highway doing 70mph. Less than 3000 miles on my truck so far.

Thanks guys.

Kids and I actually went and looked at a 2014 today but didn't feel like being hassled by salemen so we didn't get inside it. There is a lot more room in the back compared to my quad cab and that is a huge plus which does mean that I probably won't get a megacab.

I will probably go look again tomorrow and see what the options I want will cost me. Monthly payments aren't the problem, it is going from no payments to having a payment that I don't like.

Would love to see 21mpg on a 2014 and most of my travels are on highway/interstate.

I had no idea that with no mods on a 2014 that it would produce the same as my 07 with mods, that is very interesting.

Thanks for the input and I will keep watching for feedback.

If your looking at 2500's you should really give it a test drive. The ride is incredible (rear coils).

Still researching. I finally found the 2014 Stock HP/TQ numbers on the ram site.

Stock 6.7 with auto tranny is 370hp / 800tq.
Stock my 5.9 with auto tranny is 325hp / 610tq.

More than likely will go drive one tomorrow, doesn't mean I will come home with one though. Yes I am looking at the 2500.

I am definitely not a spur of the moment type of buyer. This will be my 3rd diesel just want to make sure I am making a good decision. Went from an 05 3500 DRW to my current 07 2500.

I forgot to add that the best deals are typically at the end of the model year around October. In the past, $10-$11k off sticker is the norm then if you find a good volume dealer.

Add injectors, steering box, hydroboost pump to your potential list of near future repairs to the 07 (based on my truck) and subtract that from the cost of new or add to sale price of yours to soften the blow. I believe at 200k mi, you are on borrowed time for those items. Add cost of fixing the tailgate as well. Tires, brakes, any other high $ routine maint coming up that you could benefit from not doing if you sold it.

I've been mulling around the same thing with my 07. Love it. It is solid and there are effectively no major repair $ expected for the next 50-100k mi, but I made the mistake of renting 5 new RAM crew and Megas for my project and am rollin a '14 2500 Mega for a company truck and it is SWEET!
However with 2 company trucks at the moment. Wife is not using the 07 as a DD anymore so the miles are not racking up, I can't justify the extra $.

The new coils are nice on the 2500s, but I think if I was dropping that kind of $$ on a new CTD it would have to have the Aisin........just because.

I heard next year the 3500's will have rear coils and air bags as well. If that's the case I think the 2015 3500's with Aisin is going to be the perfect truck.

Man, o` man is all I can say. Went and drove a 2014 crew cab this evening. It was smooth, handled all bumps well, got up to interstate speed with no problem. And quiet. Still didn't buy it as there were options that I wanted that this truck didn't have. However they do have the truck at another lot.

We also looked at a megacab and the room in the back seat is unbelievable. I am 6'4" and had plenty and I mean plenty of leg room. Now if they could find a megacab with the options I am wanting then I would probably still go that route, so they are looking.

Here is my last question. Real world numbers, what are these trucks getting for MPG? I know it is a heavy duty but I am still curious. 4x4, diesel with auto.

Thanks again for all input.

Thanks jadocs. I missed it.

All these numbers running through my head. Guess we will see what kind of magic numbers can be worked up this weekend. Luckily I do get employee pricing so makes almost any truck I look at down in the mid 40s range.

I traded my 03 that had 780,000 on it for a 2014 2500, and I am very happy I did. Got the auto 4x4 Laramie.

Smile

I sold my 2001 2500 4x4 and purchased a new 2014 2500 Laramie 4x4 Crew Cab. We were traveling for two months and I was tired of shifting gears on the 01. We have about 2000 miles on the new truck and on short trips we are getting 21 mpg. I'll be hooking it up to our 30ft Big Horn soon and hitting the road!
