When buying a Smarty Touch or MM3
 

When looking to purchase a Smarty Touch for my truck I discovered the following:

All new units are vin locked to the truck they are installed on and can only be used on an additional 3 trucks (4 total) after paying $150 each for those 3 additional licenses.

This occurred sometime in 2016 and covers any Smarty that has firmware with numbers larger than 1.1.1 installed on them or has had the upgraded firmware to above 1.1.1 downloaded and installed, are affected.

Results: Any new Smarty Touch or MME can only be used/installed on total of 4 trucks then it is a gauge ONLY.

The former policy of just removing the software from the truck back into the Smarty was changed to this new policy inorder to help you install the software on more than one truck at the same time. [guitar]

So, if anyone is looking at purchasing a used unit, make sure you are able to install the unit on your truck, if you have to purchase the addition license, or if the unit is a gauge only.

Keep the $150 fee in mind or try and find one with the firmware at or below 1.1.1..

Mads claims they will support both versions of the firmware (the vin lock and the no vin lock) into the future.

The people selling the used units are very confused that the manufacturer has changed the rules on them after their purchase.

These sellers do not understand that their units just took a min of $150 loss in value thanks to the "new" policy.

Point it out to them (when purchasing used) and verify the firmware level and number of licenses issued to the units SN, or you may end up with a gauge only.:o

I know where one of the unlocked Smarty Touches are and it is for sale if anyone wants to get it PM and I will give the guys email and telephone number. It won't last out the month before sold.
