Won't start Cold
2017 6.7L
Always had this problem. Fall and winter, after a temp drop, truck requires a jump to start. When I press the start button, it just clicks, black screen. Every day. Starts immediately on boost charger, very quickly. Once the engine fires, and it starts, it will restart without problems. This summer, A friend, a diesel mechanic who owns Dodge Rams, recommended that when it happens again, I jump the 2 batteries, one to the other, as he has seen that there is some minor part that requires replacing when this happens. Unfortunately I haven't been able to reach him. The probem started occuring as soon as the temp dropped (i'm in northern CA and the temps haven't gotten very cold at all, like the 40s at night). I tried that, and initially it slugishly tried to turn over, which was more than its usual behavior, but then failed to turn over again, requiring the boost charger. After the attempted jump, before the boost charger, both batteries measured 11.7 volts. This happened on the original batteries, and I was recommended to replace them. Originally i thought it had to do with leaving the trailer hooked up, or leaving the slide in camper plugged in, but it happens when no accessories or trailers are plugged in. It happened as well on the new batteries, which were high end, supposedly extra powerful (and expensive) batteries. Both replaced at same time. I have spoken with dealer and they indicated this isn't a problem they are familiar with, so I havent taken it to them. Has anyone experienced this, and is there something isolated to check? I will take it in for electrical diagnostics, but since my friend indicated a simple solution was likely, I'd like to try that first. Thanks |
Sounds like you may have a parasitic draw.
Additonally…..there’s a slight chance that you may very well have a “bad” new battery. |

Don't get cheap batteries, get a good quality batteries, AGM is great, Battereris plus, has a Duracell Battery with a 4 yr warr. really good battery

Yep It was the batteries!
Replaced them both under warranty (no charge). Problem completely resolved. Thanks!
