Oil prices !!!

I keep hearing on the news that oil price is plunging. But find just the opposite when shopping for motor oil. Paid $58 for 3 gal of Rotella T6 synthetic July 2016. Now getting a quote of $127.90 for 3 gal of Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w-40 synthetic. !!! Price was $9.50 per qt (no discount for gallon) and quoted total price includes tax + oil fees, etc.

Seriously? $128 for 3 gal of oil? Is that what you guys are paying these days? Oh, and inflation is very low these days - what a crock!!!

update: Just noticed Amazon's price w/free shipping $59.94 - that's more like it! Unbelievable price difference!

update: Just purchased 3 gal of Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w-40 synthetic at my local NAPA store for $19.99 per gal (plus tax). All is well now!

BTW, "oil price plunging" is a general statement. The price has dropped around $5.00-$6.00 off it's high which equates to around 10% of the per barrel price and equates to $0.12-$0.16 a gallon.

Pretty normal for the end of summer driving season crude deliveries (prices are for Aug and Sept delivery).

Glad you shopped around and got a good price.

About 90% of the price of your 1 gallon of Rotella is in refining, transportation, marketing, packaging, distribution and retail markup. If a 55 gal barrel of crude is about $50, let's say $1 gallon for crude for a round number, then if the price of oil "plunges" to $25/barrel - you'd only see a fifty-cent discount at the cash register.

Think of bottled water. The stuff inside is free, but you pay $4/gallon for it (~$1 a liter) for the chain of products and services to get it on the retail shelf.

FYI, for crude oil and it's distillates it's 42 gallons to a barrel.

I know it doesn't make sense but that's how they do it.

Also, a 42 gallon barrel of crude will only produce [on average] .5 gallon of lubricating oil for engines.
19.5 gallons of gasoline
9.2 gallons of Diesel or heating oil
4.1 gallons of jet fuel
and a bunch of others in small amounts

I buy a three gallon case of DELO 15W40 at Costco on sale for $28. 331,000 miles and it hasn't blown up yet.
