Oil change light?

I changed my oil at 3k on my new truck. I never got a light. No I am at 4600 miles and the oil change message came on. Is this because I never got a light the first time? Do I really need to change my oil at 1600 miles on the new oil? That seems a bit strange? Should I just reset the message and drive till this oil has 5k miles on it? Also, going by hours my average mph is 42mph. Seems like mostly highway driving!

I am using a fleetgaurd filter with delo 400.

Thanks.

It sounds like the light/message is based upon distance (5000miles with 400mile pre-warning). You'll probably need to look in your owner's manual to figure out how to re-set it.

I never follow that light...

I change mine at every 5000 miles. Always have always will. I clear the light if and when it comes on. 58500 trouble free and running strong as ever.

Edit: To clear the message, key on to run position, pump accelerator three times, key off. Might take you a couple of time to get it right.

If you didn't reset the light when you changed it then the truck thinks it has 4,600 miles on the oil, and says its time to change. So I would reset the light and run til it has 3K on it, change the oil and reset the light, then go off the light or your preferred interval, whichever is shorter.

If you did reset the light, change the oil.

IMHO lots of oil changes the first 15K miles are good.. I prefer 500, 3K, 6K, 9K, 12K, 15K, then go longer intervals.

Unless you have full deletes this is not a practice I would recommend. The emissions system puts a lot of fuel into the oil, and Dodge has spent a lot of time working on the OCI light to keep the fuel dilution to acceptable level. 58K miles is nothing to these motors, so I wouldn't ever consider making it 58K miles without issue a large feat. Fuel dilution will take its toll in the long run.

i never pay any attention to the light or any indicators except lab analysis. Sometimes I go 8K miles sometimes only 5k miles. Pull a sample every 2K miles and send off. let the lab tell you when things start piling up. If it worrys you so much...

Personally I don't see any problem changin every 5-8K miles under those mild conditions.

Do you have a different truck than the one in your sig? If not, the 5.9 is a very different animal with oil, especially the 03-04.

Every 2K, wow thats a lot of samples at $25 a pop.. I have done mine at 7,500 mile intervals.

I was thinking the same thing. Might as well just do an oil change for that kind of money.

Oh I know all too well how many miles a Cummins can rack up. My '90 is close to the half million mark.

I was just making the statement of so far so good.

And IIRC you have done deletes right? Thats a huge difference on fuel dilution.

Oh yes, I have everything deleted.

Did the DPF and EGR unplug with and Edge at 17000. When the Smarty came out I did full deletes at 43000.

I was lucky, mine never made oil in the stock form.

Maybe I should have mentioned again that I do have the deletes in place. I forget sometimes that I did the comical thing in my sig.

Because, you are correct, elimination of the 4th injection event by either the Smarty or H&S eliminates the growing oil problem.

The 6.7 went back to the re-entrant design which keeps the flame in the middle and is more efficient. The 04.5-07 pistons were designed for emissions reasons, and were part of the reason an EGR wasn't needed.
