I've done a few of these between mine and my sons and every single one of them makes a mess on the floor with the 6.7. I've tried my regular oil drain pans that catch 10 qts of oil into a screw on funnel. (1) the funnel doesn't drain into the container fast enough so it either over flows or you have to put the plug back in 3 TIMES. (2) the container doesn't hold enough oil so again the plug has to go back in while you switch containers.
I've tried the standard oil drain container but the oil just splashes out and makes a mess and it's too small to hold ALL the oil so again the plug has to go back in.. I tried a 2X3 drip tray underneath but again the mess was horrible. I've tried it with the fill cap on and off. I plastic bag the filter so at least that is clean. The last oil change I gave up part way through and stole one of my wife's pails and used that but the oil was already all over the floor and at the end I'm left with a dirty oil coated pail.
What and how is everyone else doing it? Oh I know.. Lube shop?

 

I haven't looked at the drain location on the 6.7, but is there enough room for a quick drain? If there is then hook a hose right to the quick drain and drop all the oil into a 12 quart drain container. I've seen ones that big. I forget if it was Wally World or Napa. I have quick drains on some of my farm equipment and on an airplane. They sure help you to direct the mess by using them in conjunction with a hose.

 

Fumoto valve... Google it.

 

I never thought about a quick drain as I had ruled them out for the 5.9, I wasn't willing to risk shearing it off while entering or exiting the ditch. I don't drive under those conditions anymore so it is a thought. I'll check out whats around the drain plug. I googled the Fumoto it's a nice valve.
My son does still drive in rough places and his would probably get sheared off. I even bought a new vacuum oil extractor but it's only 9.5 qts and the pipe is too short to go down the dip stick tube and I didn't want to extend it in case it came off and got stuck down there. It does work for the diffs though.
There must be another solution..

 

I cut the lip off of a 5 gallon bucket so it would slide under my truck. No mess unless I spill it when pouring it into the 15 gallon drum I use to transport the old oil to the local auto parts store.

 

How often do you drag the oil pan on the ground??

Always amazes me the people worried about ripping one of these valves off on a 4x4 truck. I'd have to rip through the front axle on mine.

Had one on my 01 for over 100k miles, plenty of pastures and ditches, never came close to ripping my axle out so the valve could be hit.

 

5 gallon bucket for me too, then I transfer it to a dedicated 5 gallon gas can that I use for waste oil storage and transport.

 

Got a 2010, use a valve from Geno's that works flawlessly. Can't say nothing bad about it.

 

Funny you should say that, but... I have ripped my front axle off once, I have also flattened a few steel rims in the past. When the snow covers everything you just can't see where the road is so you just have to guess and who knows what is underneath. It would be different if there was a warning light to tell you when the drain valve went missing, instead there is just the red oil light that tells you your engine is ruined. My son uses the ice roads as far as he can then has to drive off the ice road on trails made with a cat. He's been buried so deep the cat's had to pull him out. The only time his truck sees a paved road is when he comes to the city, maybe once every two months so it is a concern as often his running truck is all that stands between him and freezing to death.

The 5 gallon cut down would work with a vee cut in the top, thanks I'll give it a try.

 

5 gallon bucket fits perfectly under mine, even comes with a lid and carry handle for ease of transport to the recycling center.

Honestly the easiest vehicle for regular maintenance that I've ever owned.

 

Now that might be a better idea, some kind of commercial bucket with a lid. That way I could close the lid after emptying it and not have to worry about having to clean it out each time. Thanks.

 

I also run a Fumoto valve. Ive put one on every vehicle I've owned. It drains a little slower but its super clean. I put a hose on the end of it and put the end of the hose in the drain pan.

 

You should see where Ive been putting this lil half ton company truck. Shell is providing them to us cause its cheaper than paying repairs on our personal vehicles.

No way in hell Id have one of those things on my truck and put it out here. It wouldnt last one day.

Like my Dad used to tell me, "The fastest car I would ever own would be a rental car." Gotta check the block for added insurance every time. HaHa

 

Actually the best way if you use a lot of rental cars is to get a credit card that covers the CDW added insurance, many cards do. Sometimes the cost of the personal accident and collision damage waiver can be more than the cost of renting the car.
