Noise when exhaust brake is turned on

As I was waiting for my wife to come out of a store the other day, I started the motor and turned on the high idle. After it was running a couple minutes, I pressed the button for the E-brake. There was a distinct change in the motors sound, almost like the E-brake was partially "engaged", if that’s the right term.

Is this normal? Does this mean that’s there is a little drag on the motor from the brake anytime its on?

I normally turn the brake on anytime I'm in the truck, but I have not noticed this before - but, I can't say I've ever paid any attention to this scenario.

It is normal, the EB will engage to help warm up the engine. When I test drove an 07' 6.7 I noticed it. Made a funny kinda clucking sound. LOL

Larry,

run that Ebrake on 24-7. keeps the slide moving and reduces the chances of it sticking from soot/carbon. EB will come on when engine temps are below 160 (if my memory serves me correctly on the temp). Like Spooler said, helps warm things up on those cold days.

Hi Neighbor,
Here is a link that Cummins has provided to their "Turbo Diesel News" e-mail. This link provides information on how to operate the 6.7L engine. It was published some time ago by Cummins, but Cummins is re-emphasizing the video again with all the new owners of a 6.7L engine. Maybe this will help?

Thanks Bro., I'll be sure keep keep it on. BTW Just what does Spooler know about cold weather? Just kidding Spooler, I know it can get all the way down to 40 degrees in GA. At least thats what it was when I was stationed there for training in 74 and 84. Why, I was in the very real danger of getting a "sunburn" It was funny how the guys from down south were freezing, but I was rotating back from germany in 84, where -10 was not unusual. It felt like spring to me.

Thanks for the assurance guys.

Hey Larry

You should hear the difference when youve got a 5" turbo back with no muffler. Sounds like a jet about to take off when turn the EB on.

I can't wait to find out - soon I hope. Did you find that the EB was anymore effective after switching to the 5" system? That would be a big plus for towing our RV.

I didnt find any difference when swapping exhaust as far as the EB goes, I ran simms for 12k. BUT when I loaded the XRT pro it "feels" a little less effective. However it will stay on longer now, which I like, all the way down to 800rpm. I have the G56 so it may be different than the auto. I have read a few threads about the EB being weaker with tuner, but it hasnt bothered me enough to research it.

Sorry to kinda veer off track, but I've noticed that my EB is working better after I installed the S&B intake and changed the timing from 3 to 2 on the Jr. Could just be a coincidence, but there is a huge difference in EB performance after I did it. And it does sound more jet like with the intake as well (4" straight pipe)

new to diesels, only bought my truck yesterday, just so I understand. for everyday driving it is better to keep the exhaust brake on because it reduces carbon buildup and warms up quicker. it wont have any side effects by keeping it on 24-7?

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Do you still have to keep pushing the EB button with the XRT?

Welcome to the world of diesel turcks and happy new year all!

I have been assured that its best to run 24/7 and there is a mod that allows it to stay on. I have not done that yet because of a little issue we are chaseing, so I keep pushing the button.

Perhaps Chris or Chris or Blake or one of the other super mechanics we have here will jump in for a comment.

Welcome Friend!

On the 3rds gens its an easy mod using relays because each button has its own wiring. On the 4th gens the whole bank of switches are wired on a board and no one has come up with a solution as of yet. My electrical skills are not up to par enough to figure it out...

We should bring it up to H&S, they may be able to implement it. But for me its a non issue, cause come April (hopefully) my VGT will be collecting dust in a box on the shelf of the shop.
