How will my Cummins start this winter

I am wondering how my new 6.7 will start this winter. Also how good is the heat. I live in MN so the winters are cold.

I am new to the 6.7 but will say my 2005, 5.9 never had a problem starting in North Dakota at 2 degrees or in Alaska at 8 below. Actually, never had a problem starting it anywhere !

I'm not sure about a 6.7 but my 5.9 has started at -22 with out being plugged in, it sounds bad but it ran. That said I have started all the way down to -34 with it plugged in. Since you have a 6.7 I would assume you have a fairly new truck, keep the batteries in good shape and you should be good to go.

It will start fine. Get the under hood winter front from dodge, p/n 82208646. Makes a huge difference with the engine brake turned on as well. Get an oil pan heater too, I have one and the warm up time is reduced greatly. Even at -30, with the cover on and EB on, the water temp in town hits 180 without too much issue.

currently have a 5.9 and have ordered a 6.7 '11. am wondering if fuel anti gel additive is added to the 6.7? when in cold weather with the 5.9 i would put in about 10 oz of power service white.

just wondering how the 6.7 does, need additive in the cold?

thanks,

david

Your not worried about gelling in So Cal are you?

But yes, in extreme cold weather additive is going to help keep the fuel from gelling. Wether it be a 6.7 or a old 12valve.

cold weather fronts and block heaters

good grief no, not worried about gelling here in san diego county. i hate to say this but i may be back in the detroit area this winter. sorry to our detroit members but that place sucks!

mother back in that area and i can not convince her to allow me to move her out here, she is 86 and getting to the point that someone needs to be there. hate to leave "74 and sunny" oceanside for the dismal, decay of the rust belt but may have to. cold winters back there with some days below 0 degrees. i got a strange look from the dealer when i ordered my '11 with the cold weather package.

dam, now if i can just figure out how to use an ice scraper.

If its going to be below 0, definitely get the oil pan heater and use it together with the block heater. In 2.5 hours, my engine temperature goes from -20 to 90 degrees and she fires off like the middle of summer. That oil pan heater makes a HUGE difference.

Yes, I use winter antigel additive also. Boy, I'm beginning to hate winter, but I love the 4 season changes that we have. Might be part of the ADD that I have...

San Diego to Detroit? You poor guy. After living in San Diego from 1991 -2009, I moved from Poway last August back to my hometown of Oklahoma City. I sure miss the perfect weather and the dirt bike riding at Ocotillo Wells, walking at La Jolla Cove, cruising our CJ7 down the coast from Carlsbad on a sunny weekend. But I don't miss the the ultra corrupt state gov't and their greed. Felt like I was getting out while the gettin's good.

But Detroit? Wrong move!

now wait a minuted, i was born in detroit but left in '68. only reason i go back there is to see my mother and try to convince her to allow me to move her to the golden state.

don't mean to hijack this thread but will say this, the rust belt states are depressing. and now that i think about it so are the F-ing politicians running this state of californication. believe me, i will be coming back with or without my sainted (?) mother.

david,
oceanside, calif. (74 and sunny)

deh9 - its an aftermarket heater, I have it tied into my block heater so it only has 1 connection. Its like this one. http://www.dieselservices.com/html/e...eater_p148.cfm

Its not that hard to install, its a PIA to remove the paint off the oil pan though. A wire wheel on an angle grinder works REALLY well though.

Cycle the... glow box(?) twice if you haven't drained the batteries. Block heater is a must.

Then look into those timed Esbars or other diesel heaters. Those work great. You can even key on the truck without starting, turn on the fan and you'll get hot air out of the vents. Works for most oilfield/forestry/mobile medics/pilot services that shop here up here in northwest Alberta. It heats the truck while using less fuel than idling.

Am I off base?
