Factory Trailer Brake Controller

OK, I just pulled my 36 foot Triple Slide 5th Wheel RV (14,000LB) Saturday for the first time with my 2010 Ram 3500 Crew Cab DRW, Auto.

Trailer Brake Controller:
Say I set the controller on 5.0, when I press the brake pedal to slow down does this factory controller send 5.0 power to my trailer brakes? OR does it apply more power to trailer brakes the "harder" I mash the truck brake pedal??

Recently pulled my RV with my friends 2008 3/4 Duramax (has integrated brake controller) and his controller would vary power to trailer brakes based on how hard I mash truck brake pedal....pretty cool...

Any comments as to exactly how Dodge Integrated controller works?

It "should" be proportional, but on my dad's 2010 it did not work well at all. He actually removed it and installed a MaxBrake.

My Buddy's 2010 is the same way the integrated brake do's not work very well he has had it back to the dealer several times they say that the way its. So out it comes and going to put in a prodigy controller in its place!

I'm pretty sure it's not proportional...the way it "acts" to me is like an accelerometer style.

Dodge really messed up the brake control on these things. Mine has gotten me in a jam a couple times, just haven't put the max brake in it yet.

If you set it to 5 the MAX you will get is 5 and less if the accelerometer senses less. Imagine an unloaded cargo trailer where 5 will lock the wheels up so set to 3 and it's good. Load the trailer up and 3 is too low so set to 9 and all is good. This is havoc when using a dump trailer, dial up, dial down and so on per load. I have discovered that the trailer brakes should be adjusted up properly for it to work well, Yeh I know we all check them regularly but even a new trailer needs them adjusted. The factory controller IS an accelerometer style like a lot of brake controllers out there, so it needs to "feel" the truck slowing so be ready to "reach for the trigger"

Yeah, accelerometers are JUNK. Chevy and Ford both put brake controllers in that work without ruining your trucks brakes.

Do the Chevy and ford units tap into the hydraulic system like a max brake?
