Check engine light

I just went through all the messages in this forum but failed to find my problem.

I have a 2010 3500 Laramie with 32,000 Kms and yesterday my check engine light came on and I pulled over and restarted my truck but it came on again and stayed on during about 5 stops. I should know this but does not the error code come up on the display or do I have to do something to bring this up? This may be a stupid question and I do apologize but our dealers are closed today (Monday) as it is a holiday here in Alberta.

Starting with the keyfob off: on-off-on-off-on - then the codes should display - if that didn't work, try going to an Autozone or other automotive parts store ya'll have up there, and ask them to pull the codes with their scanner. Autozone will give a printout of the codes and what they mean.

I just started carrying a code reader (about $75) in my 4th gen as standard equipment. Didn't want to get stranded somewhere not knowing if anything was seriously wrong when the light went off.

Never had a code on my 2003, 0-100k miles.

I tried the on-off method but I got nothing, yet the engine light is still on. I will take it back to my dealer in the morning.

I don't believe the on-off-on-off-on trick works anymore.

Make sure when going to the off position, you are not turning the key all the way to the "lock" position. From lock (key first inserted) turn one click to "off", then start the procedure - on - off - on - off - on within 5 seconds. It does work because I've done it on my truck. Use the odometer reset button to cycle through the codes. I do believe there are some codes that set the check engine light, but requires a scanner to pull them. There are also codes that will set, no engine light, but also requires a scan tool.
