Blown head gasket

30k all but 2k with the H&S on. From what I hear the stock turbo with no wastegate puts a lot of pressure into the motor.

Either way, resurfaced the head and put ARP studs in so hope it lasts longer this time.

If you put headstuds in and re-surfased the head, it will last. You should have fire-ringed the head when you had it off then it would have been good forever.

Yuck. This makes me wanna take the H&S off my truck, except that I can't because I also deleted it and I don't wanna put all that stuff back on.

Would've it helped to set your defuel at like 32psi? Or doesn't the H&S work that way?

Do the ARP head studs now.

Hoss 01-10-2013 02:43 PM

I don't even know what ARP studs are, what they do or how to install them.

Hoss 01-10-2013 03:34 PM

Okay, so I found the studs online and I think I understand what they do. How hard are they to install? And how do you tighten them into the block with just a threaded end sticking out?

ARP is a manufacturer of fasteners, including studs for holding down cylinder heads, they come in a few different qualities of material. Studs hold better than bolts and because ARP makes them of better material than the factory bolts they do not stretch as much. I was going to install them there are pros and cons for both, I decided to live by the limits I set into the mini max and to always make sure I warm up the engine before loading up the engine.

How did you blow the head gasket? post some pictures and your findings.

Doesn't suprise me, I found a few head bolts loose on few trucks that I've done head studs on. I really doubt the slightly elevated VGT drive pressure would be enough to cause a failure.

Good luck, now its a good time to remove all that polution junk, if you haven't done so all ready.

On the ARP studs...

How is it that some studs and washers can cost almost $600? Even when made of high tensile materials. That seems like a LOT of money for what you're getting. Granted, it could be saving you lots of money down the road, but how can what amounts to some nuts and bolts really cost that much?

Exactly.[laugh]

If you're going to do stud yourself, be careful. A couple guys on CF popped into a water passage, while installing studs.

New2Diesel 01-11-2013 07:20 PM

Headstuds are a must. End of story

Hoss 01-11-2013 10:06 PM

Is there a special tool required to take them out and install them? I'm assuming they're installed with thread locker so I doubt they come out easily.

No Thread lock (loctite). Lots and lots of ARP lube to get the correct tq on the studs.
