6.7 issues.

I am considering upgrading to a newer model truck and would like to know when they got most of the issues with the 6.7 worked out. I have heard several things about early model having head problems and coolant issues. I believe maybe 2010 and newer might be ok but wanted to get some other peoples experience with the newer engine.

I sure hope in the past 8.5 years they got most of the problems worked out as I just bought one a month ago. [laugh]

New ones are fine, even the MPG is better on them than when they first put the emission and regin stuff on them in 07&08.

2011 and 2012 had issues with O2 sensors, harness connectors were not crimped properly. So overlay harness fixed problem. Some 2013 and 2014 were having SCR issues causing code P20EE to set, replacing SCR and updating PCM fixed problem. I haven't seen head issue or coolant issues and I work on these 5 days a week 8 hours a day.

BigIron70, I am looking at a 2011CTD with 65K on it and it has been fleet maintained will all the records plus no tuners have been installed on this truck. What should I look for or expect to have trouble with. What type of expensive repairs do you see on the 11 & 12 models?

You will be coming up on the engine perform service minder in the cluster. That will just be a cleaning of EGR valve, EGR cooler, and breather filter replace. I would also recommend doing a cleaning of the air control valve at the air intake. This air valve controls air flow into engine for EGR operation. It will become coated in soot and will stick closed if not cleaned. I also clean the sensor at the air intake manifold. Air filter, fuel filter, trans and diff service is also recommended. I would also check the exhaust pipe outlet for soot. If the inside of pipe is coated in soot I would not buy since the DPF is cracked and leaking. The DPF runs about $2500.00 so keep that in mine if soot has coated inside of the pipe. I would check the history of truck for any major repairs. Check the front axle for pinion seal leaks if 4X4 model, seems to happen most on 2011 and 2012 model year. Minor issues have been selector shaft seal on trans coming out of housing and causing trans fluid leaks. New updated seal fixes that problem. Good luck with your new truck if you decide to buy.

Thanks for the information BigIron70!

If you do the EGR delete on the 2011 6.7 Cummins does it fix most of the engine issues?

would cut down on soot related issues, O2 sensor and turbo problems for sure.

I have had both my 02 sensors replaced on my 2014 at two different times and I only have 14,000 Kms on my truck.

My 12 made it 380,585 miles before a valve spring ruptured and sent the valve straight down. Reman long block next week........

Upgraded from 02 to a 15 back in October. Very happy with stock performance pulling 12k lbs trailer.
