I just traded my 2009 3500 for a new 2018 3500.
I notice that the new one has 2 screens ( can't call them gages) one is the fuel filter life and the other is the oil life.

Now the fuel filter I can kind of understand how it is determined by measuring the PSI on each side of the filter and when restriction is at a certain point say that it should be replaced.

But how is oil life determined?

I'm guessing at run hours and starts?

I am not sure how it works but if it's similar to what gm has it's a sensor in the oil pan. GM has had them in vehicles for 10 years or more.

Both the oil and fuel filter life are based of algorithms, starts, run cycles, mileage, hours, idle time, etc.

There are no pressure sensors, heck even your oil pressure is a dummy made up pressure.

I think I'm getting old . it seems that the fuel filter would be simpler with PSI sensor's but who am I to out think a over paid engineer that needs to make things complicated so he/she can keep their job.[duhhh]

As for the oil life thank you at least I know a little about what is happening now.

I think the oil life gauge is total BS, my new 2018 2500 got to 10K miles and still said it was 50% good. The dealer said its find, I found another dealer. Oil is the life blood of engines. My 2009 had 280k miles on it when I traded ran as strong as the day I bought it and used no oil. Longest I ever went with synthetic was 10k before changing . Its best to go with with some old school thinking sometimes IMHO. New engines , $100.+ labor rates oil is a cheap insurance policy. Fuel the same thing

I was wondering about this oil life recommendation from the truck's computer on my 2016.
On my 92, and '07, i have always changed at 3k to 5k miles with Delo 400.

Should I follow the same rules with the 2016? Delo 400 still ok? or is some full synthetic BS "required" now?

I think this "oil life" algorithm would go to 12-15k before hitting 0%.

On the fuel filter life indicator, does anyone know if the factory would potentially have a warranty complaint if you exceeded that warning slightly?

I have 3% left according to their algorithm, but I also have a 500 mile trip this weekend.

Seems odd that fuel filters would only last about 720 gallons. I watch the pressure drop on my 2007, and it lasts a lot longer than that.

What basis are you using in determining that the fuel filters only last 720 gallons???

The fuel filter life indicator in the fancy computer dash is showing 3% left, and next to it shows 699 gallons used since last change.
Doesnt matter what their actual algorithm is, it will show 0% by about 720.

Let me know what your hand calculated mpg is if you use the odometer difference between fuel filter changes and the “fancy computer” attempt at calculating the gallons consumed. It won’t even be close. Additionally.....if you keep a record of the actual gallons you buy between fuel filter changes, it won’t be remotely close to the “fancy computer” numbers.
