I've been looking at 2500 SLT's for the past few weeks and noticed that all the trucks with a 3.73 or 4.10 axle had a "L". All the trucks with a 3.42 axle had a "1"

been doing price comparison of Ford and Dodge. The Dodge is $6k more expensive for a similar model. Is the Cummins worth that much more? Not sure, but I think both trucks are pretty comparable in value....

You can't get a 6-speed with 4.10's.

Every G56 equipped truck I've ever seen has a L where the 1 should be on the shift ****. Then again, I don't care for the G56 trans so I don't pay that much attention to it.

2010 Laramie, 3.73 gears, and my shift **** has a "1" on it. FWIW. Running light, you can start in 2nd, then go 4th and 6th, and save a few shifts...

That's the best explanation yet. Higher final drives will make more use of first gear as first gear. Lower finals will skip 1st more often.
FWIW, I love having L gear even thought the truck can take off in 2nd with a house hooked to it if needed. Nice for pulling into the garage, 3pt turns etc, stop and go traffic, and of course starting out with a load.
No clutch slip at all, just dump it into slow gear!
So 2010s are no maunal and 4.10's. Drove an 06 like that and while it's not for me, I'm more of a 3.42 and 7th gear person, it was stout!

There is no G56 with 4.10's.. in any year.

I would like 3.73's and a 7 speed, with a 7th of .65, and 6th of .85.. Would be perfect for towing and empty driving.

G56 came with 4.44 or 4.88s in the 5500.
4.10s were available in the 2500 during the first year or two of production.
I have 2 G56 trannies. One low gearing from an 05 (in my 12v) and an 08 G56 in a 5500 and both say 1 not L.
The G56 is definatly a better trans than the old NV5600. Mack trucks shift better. Durability is also not a problem when they are not abused.
I also say it was a parts bin thing for the "L".

In the pickups, not the cab and chassis, there was nothing offered with the G56 lower than 3.73's.
