Tachometer on Non Ic 1st Gen?

Iv been doing a bunch of research over the last couple days. My truck is a 91 non Ic. I found lots of information on how to put a tach in a 91.5-93 (The plug under the dash)... How about the earlier 1st gens?

You could get a magnetic pickup tach kit or wire it to a stator post in the alternator and get a electric tach with cylinder adjustment switch.

Very cool. I just did some research. this isn't something I have any experience with. I did some reading on the electronic tachometers, that you basically wire to the alternator, 12vdc, and ground. Is that basically the same deal people do on the 91-93 trucks with the plug under the driverside, except there's is all right there in one location?

Would something like this work?

The IC trucks I think pick up there tach signal off the crank sensor but I could be wrong.

That tach would work but does not say if it comes with the mag pickup or not.

I see the magnetic pick ups on google, which a lot of guys run of the Isspro R5503 tachs, my only problem with that is I can't fathom spending $200+ on this project

I found a YouTube video of someone putting a tach on what looks like a 1st gen, ic Cummins I'll post it below. In the video he simply wires to a Switched (keyed) 12v supply, ground, and to a stator on the alternator. Is there any reason this cannot be done on the non ic trucks?
Would I be able to purchase a tachometer like this at a local parts store?

I have no experience with installing gauges on these old trucks, so please don't mind me if I'm asking stupid questions.
