What do you take for on road repairs?

We're leaving soon on a 2500+ mile family vacation. Our trips are generally withing 4-5 hours of home so I'm not too concerned about not having what I need to fix something on the road.

This time we'll have stretches where we are a couple hours from anywhere.

I'm taking

fuel filter
oil filter
air filter
couple qts of oil
couple qts ATF
gallon of coolant
spare serpentine belt
decent selection of hand tools
grease and a couple bearings for RV axles.

Without getting carried away, what else should I throw in?

Good jack and a hammer.
Maybe radiator hoses.

Duct tape, ball bearings and bubble gum.......[laugh]……all kidding aside looks like you’ve got a good selection. I like “roughstocks” thinking and second the jack, my stock one won’t work without a few blocks of wood as an assist. You’ll be with your family so a good sense of humor and everything else will work out, I’m jealous! An extra head light bulb has been useful for me and as always a good flashlight! I have a 3D cell wired into the truck and it’s never failed me. Just for peace of mind throw a meter on the batteries and the alternator and make sure all is well! A few each of your fuses couldn’t hurt to have and they don’t take up much space. The list really is endless, unless you’ve been out and needed it you won’t know. Good luck and most important have fun!

Filter wrench. Bottled water. Cell phone charger. Medical gloves. Leather gloves.

Good call on the filter wrench. Didn't even think of that one.

I always keep spare fuses, electrical tape, and electrical pliers handy also, have needed them more than once before.

Well like all of our luck youll always miss that one thing that bites you in the *** but sounds like you got a good list here id check the spare and its pressure

i don't take any thing other than the spare tire....i hate waiting for something to break[coffee] [laugh]

I'd take a second spare for the RV. Usuaully when one tire goes on a RV, the other on the same axle is soon to follow. I know this all to well.

A roll up foam back packing pad.. makes for a comfy creeper..

Mexstan 06-13-2009 09:25 AM

Pardon my curiosity, but where are you going that will take you hours from anywhere?

Got that covered. I recently put new tires and wheels on the fifth wheel. The original 4 tires weren't in terrible shape so I kept an extra spare. Gave an extra to my dad as well.

I couldn't list it all if I tried, but something like 600 lbs of gear, yeah I know [dummy] I also have a tool box, so I can store a bit more. Other than a welder, i think I have it covered.

Filters: Oil, Fuel, Strainer for Walbro, and 2 micron filter
Lube: 2 ATF +4, 2 Motor Oil, Brake Fluid, Gallon Radiator Fluid (mixed)
Tire plugs, Tire Patches, Air Pump, Fix A Flat (for bead leaks)
2 bottle jacks, Plus Stocker, boards for them (soft ground requires them)
Gloves, 2 10,000lbs tow straps, 1 30,000lbs tow strap
Small Tarp, Large Tarp, and a ground matt to work on
Spare lug nuts, nuts, bolts, oil plug, diff plug
Tube of JB weld (can really save the day)
3 foot breaker bar with impact sockets (need the heavy duty)
Craftsman 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 tool set
Lug Wrench
All the other tools (oil filter, ect)
DC/AC inverter
Jumper Cables
Some food (granola bars, electroliyte tabs)
Fire extingisher (both class ABC powder, and Halitron gas AB (won't work on electrical because it only displaces oxygen)
Bag of mini fuses, glass fuses, regular fuzes, pluse electrical tape
Duct tape, towels, flash light, HID flash light, Flairs
Spare Walbro Fuel pump
First aid kit
Blankets
Spare Belt for the truck
Ice scraper (some of us see the white stuff)
Baseball glove and baseball (kills a lot of time when stuck in traffic)
Gun (for when we really go out in the boonies)

Then in the trailer tool box (cargo)
7 gallon air tank
Spare battery to run trailer (small battery is for breakaway)
Battery chargers
Fix a flat
Bearings and seals for every axle
Jack
All the extra tools from the garage (extra wrench's, sockets, ect)
Spare wires, duct tape, shovel, ax.
Lug Wrench
All the oils/lubes for the ATV's (so I have stuff for the truck in there too)

I know I'm forgeting a ton of stuff too, and I welcome anybody to check that I have all of that, it's a lot, but since most of our trips are 600 miles from home, i do try to have all the parts to fix it myself. I have u joints, and some other stuff at home, should load that up too.... hmmm [laugh]

For some reason I have to give props to this question

[coffee]

Only if I were lucky enough to even consider asking such a question.

Oh and I keep duct tape, fuel filter/wrench, bailing wire, good pocket knife, flashlight, lighter, .380 pistol, and a socket set at all times. Probably some other junk under the seat to do McGeiver type stuff with.
