Went looking for a '97 ended up with an 03!!!

I cannot believe what people want for these trucks "well abused"!!!
For the last two weeks I've been searching for a replacement to my '89 F150 4x4..RIP...
Seeing that I pack the miles on at times, Cummins had the best MPG rating. (as well as a bunch of other stuff it seems)....
All the 96-98 12 valve trucks I came across where "lets say" WELL USED and they wanted TOP dollar!

After almost giving up I came across a silver 03 with the 48re tranny, quad cab, 6' bed with a sprayed linex liner, sport, slt pkg, tow and plow pkg....

This younger fella' had gotten it as a graduation gift...Imagine that...Fortunatly he was the type that was out there polishing it rather than beating it!!!
His father worked as the head mechanic at a Benz dealership and kept that thing in tip top shape.

Needless to say I was not looking to spend this much on a "work truck" but all the "work truck prices" where so close I could not pass it up.

So sometime this week all the paper work should be done...

Also, he cannot remember the name of the power chip he installed (he said it cost him almost 600 three years ago) He said it boosted his MPG to over 20 and supposedly takes the truck to almost 400HP and just under 800 Ft/lbs...????
It plugged in right at the top of the motor into a wiring harness.
He said that it was the only one that could be quickly removed before going back for dealership work....at the time...

any ideas????

Thanks!
can you tell I'm alittle excited???

Look for the ECM under the hood. It should be hanging off it. Congrats on the new truck. As for the old 12 valves. Yes they are used and abused. But that is the motor to get. The pump was bullet proof with the exception of mine. They are tourqe mosters. Hard to explain but my 94 with an auto and 3:54 gears had this monsterous tourqe feeling to it. My 04.5 which is much faster and has a set of 4:10 does'nt have the same feel to it. More like a car. Plus the 12v is proven to last an easy 500k. The 2nd gen 24v has pump problems every 100k. The new ones are not as heavily proven yet in the mileage catagories since they are not as old. But I did see a couple of 03's with 500k on them selling on ebay. They both went for about 12k.

So how much did you get it for?

kutch 10-02-2006 01:40 PM

Well lets just say that the 01s in my area where going from a low of 18K with anywhere from 120K - 187K miles. To a high of $24K with 60K miles and no warranty.

I'll only say this...
I somewhere between the above prices for the '03 with 52K miles on it + the remainder of the warranty (bumper to bumper(7yr 70K) and Cummins(7 yr 100K))...+ the chip.

So did I do Ok????

+ I'm new to diesel, all this talk about ULSF has kinda' got me thinking if I'm doing the right thing?
I know it doesn't effect 06 and older vehicals but really...does it?
*Am I in for putting additives in for the rest of the time I have this truck just to keep the internals lubricated???***

Tell me now!!! [director] The truck is being held for me Until Wed....

I'm sitting here reading your post trying to figure out what the heck is the secret, Your not playing poker. If you want to know if you did "OK", Maybe being alittle upfront and little less cagey will illicit a better response?

You must transfer the warranty as below

Also remember that to maintain the warrranty status Dodge requires you to transfer the warranty to yourself by paying a small transfer fee to have the warranty transfered to you. As soon as you get the truck take it to your local Dodge dealer and ask to have the warranty transfered to you as I believe that your are required to transfer within 30 days of so. All they should need is the VIN. Don't let them know about the "Chip" or they may try to void your warranty before you ever get it.

Thanks!
Very good info! Will do...

Also,,,,Not being "cagey"....I was just looking for a round about estimation of how I did. I do not like talking "exact money" on websites. Only time I talk money is face to face, and then not with just anyone...

Hard to say how you did if you don't know exactly what you paid for it.
