Train horns
 

help an idiot out. Want to install some train horns in my truck.

What size, tank, lines, horns, what do you recommend? I know their has to be some train horn gurus on here

Not much to it. The easiest/cheapest way is just a horn, an air tank and hose, and some kind of switch. The cheapness comes from not having a compressor. If you buy a compressor, the cost goes up, but you can also run tools or air up tires as needed right from your truck. I bought two 3-trumpet horns from a place called siege engineering on ebay - I was very happy with them and they have excellent products (even have sound clips on their ebay pages!). I found a used Viair compressor and a tank from a low-rider shop also on ebay. I used regular shop type rubber air hose on my first setup, but it did have some leaks. I tapped the factory horn wire and wired the solenoids in with it, so when I honk the factory horn, everything fires.

On the new truck I'm running DOT air brake line, which should solve the leaks.

Finding a spot to mount the horns can be a problem. I've got a replacement bumper, so there's room under it for my horns with a convenient fog-light opening nearby. I mounted the tank and compressor on the outside of the driver's side frame rail.

Ebay for K3LAs, a couple of 5 gallon tanks, few feet of dot air line, Air Zenith compressor and you have 200lbs of 150db minivan moving noise.
My horns are under my truck just about right under my drivers seat. Tanks on pass side, compressor under rear pass seat in the cubby there. I mounted a locomotive air horn hand lever on the pass side.

Try and find a real train horn cluster off of a train. You can find them if you look hard. Go to a truck salvage and get an airtank off of a peterbilt, they are just the right dimension to hide it somewhere underneath. Point the horns at the ground so when you blow them the sound hits the ground and if you have enough pressure you will shake the ground!!!! I put some on my 2000 pete and I know I have caused a few people to crap themselves!

Hoot does have ne of the slickest installs out there, I do like mine, but I am not sure I'd wanna go head to head in a db competition with him. You have had a few good leads, look them up, then come back with more questions if you have some.
