tires

Talked to another CTD 600 owner today in a 2500 4x4 swb Quadcab who had aquired his 315/75 (hummer) BFG AT at the hummer dealer. His truck looked AWSOME. My question revolves around quality of ride with a 35 inch tall tire.

1. Is there vibration involved with highway speed?

2. Is there any drifting due to the high sidewall of the tire?

3. I have heard of something called "powder balancing" the
tires instead of weights, is there any validity to this?

4. Do the 315s rub on stock rims and stock suspension?

5. If there is good responses to these questions.... HOW IN THE
HECK DO I GET MY HANDS ON A SET OF THEM!!!!

6. OK I'm calm.... How much are they as throw backs from
hummer.

Thanks for any input.

1. I have no vibration up to what some would consider unsafe speeds.
2. I have not noticed any drifting, I can still talk on the phone and drink coffee without any problem.
3. I did not dismount my tires so they still have the awsome factory balancing, less than 2 ounces of weight on each tire.
4. Mine do not, truck is stock, 315s on H2 rims. More on that here, https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=44685
5. I was going to buy on eBay but right before I did I called the local Hummer dealer and they had them for $100 each wheel and tire.

Bertram65,

Thanks a lot. I'm probably going to stay with the stock rims at this point. Have you noticed a change in fuel mileage?

Thanks Jamie

Mine rides at least as good as it did with the stock Michelins, and in some cases even better. They are plusher on the small bumps than the stockers and the difference at highway speeds is just about indistinguishable. I noticed a tad bit softer takeoffs and braking, but cornering remains solid as ever. The softness I experienced is probably just due to the lower pressures these had when I picked them up... haven't adjusted them yet and currently all 4 are only @ 38lbs (low). Personally, I don't see a need for extravagant balancing such as powder, etc. on tires 35" or less. I've owned several lifted trucks with tires this size and they usually balance out just fine as long as the guy is doing them right. Discount usually does a good job... I know, I used to work for them! I am running the factory balancing with the H2 wheels (didn't dismount 'em) and they are smooth as silk. Anyhow, the only rubbing I've noticed so far is once I touched one of the factory mudflaps during a diving/braking full lock turn, no big deal. I've heard others say that they rub the control arms at full lock, but it's not really bad enough to worry about. I got the complete set of brand new wheels & tires off of Ebay for $500, quite a steal if you ask me. I've seen lots of them in Florida on Ebay, so you can save yourself about $200-250 in shipping costs by picking them up locally.

FYI, If you are going to run the stock wheels, you will probably have more crowning of the tread than the 8.5" H2 wheels, which could lead to premature wear unless you run the pressures low enough to flatten the tread out.

I have not been able to get a mileage report yet, since I am still on my first tank since the swap, and I haven't had my Speedo/ODO reprogrammed for the new size yet, but I can tell you that it doesn't seem to be using much, if any, more fuel than stock (a little decrease is to be expected). Nice thing is that now it's about 300RPM's less @ hwy speeds, which puts it into the sweet spot for mileage (1800-1900RPM's).

Lot's of other threads in this forum on this subject... just do a search for "315's priceless"... lots of good info there.

One last thing, the truck is now 2" taller now, so if you park in a garage, be really careful!! Mine won't fit now

Good luck!

Jmac,

I've got about 11,000 miles on my 315's now. They are on the H2 wheels and still have the stock balancing. I have done some serious four wheeling and have never had them touch the fenders or the control arms. That only seems to happen with stock wheels.
They run very smooth on the highway. There is no need to overthink the balancing issue. There is very little sidewall flex under normal loading and I have not felt any wandering due to their height.
I have posted before about the mounting of the H2 wheels on these trucks. They do have to be modified, but it's fairly simple and does not require dismounting the tires. Also these wheels are the PERFECT size for thses trucks. Everything clears. They are available on E-bay. I paid $450. for a full set, then $85. for a brand new single wheel for the spare. I decided to get a second set for later and paid another $450. for that set. All in like new condition.
They raise the gear ratio a little and reduce the mileage a little. The speedo (pinion factor) can be reset to match.
Also, the stock Dodge caps can be modified to fit.

padiesel,
The Pro Comp's look good on the website but the website does not give a lot of info. Do you have any pictures? How much did it cost for mounting and balancing? What is the warrenty on the tires? Did you buy direct or order them throgh some tire dealer? Also, you don't say but I assume ( ) you have a 4x4. Thanks.

Another happy 315 owner. First and foremost, I always felt something about the truck just didn't look right until I got the 315's. Something about it just makes me happy everytime I look at the car. I don't think I've ever stepped out of this thing and walked into the store, house, office, etc. without looking back *at least* twice.

With respect to the questions...

My answers are the same as everyone else and I also picked these up for around $100.00/each wheel AND tire (got a 5th for the spare too - and YES it fits...which is incredible). I LOVE the Dodge alloys, so I chose not to install the H2 rims. On the stock rims, I do get rubbing on full lock turns, but it's not TOO bad...it's definitely there though. It's easy to avoid full lock, however, and hasn't decreased the practicality of the truck around town - still love the ride, handling, and overall feel of the truck. As everyone else mentioned, it does raise ride height so be ready. Everytime someone gets in my truck they comment on the height - I guess it's time for NERF bars.

FYI, I posted a thread a while back called "315's installed - pics" and posted before and afters. Do a search and you'll find it.

I've been looking at the ProComp's too. I too would like to see pictures of the tires on our trucks. As for mounting cost, I've talked to a couple of different shops here in Houston. Discount wanted 100 for all and a smaller shop wanted 52.50. The tires have a 50,000 mile tread life warranty, and if I'm not mistaken there's not another tire of that size with a warranty like that. I've looked at ordering from 4wheel parts and National tire and wheel, but a local 4x4 shop can give them to me mounted and balanced for less then ordering and having someone mount and balance. The best price I've seen is 797.00 installed. If there's a better price out there let me know. Thanks

Spoke with Hummer of Orlando today and the parts guy (Brandon) said they have sold the take offs before... at $150 a piece!!! That's not the deal I thought I was looking for..still cheap but not the prices you guys are writing me. I think I'll check e-bay.

Thanks for the input.
Jamie.

Yeah, you'd be way better off to buy a local set of take-offs from Ebay, then sell the wheels for $200-$250 if you don't want 'em. That way I'd say you could walk away with a set of 4 BFG's for roughly about $250

Also thinking about going with the 285/70 17 BFG AT. Only because I really have no use for 35inch tires, and I don't want to loose fuel mileage.... but they sure look good.
