Thinking about a new truck. Have questions.

My wife mentioned getting a new truck the other day. Now the little squirrel in my head is running fast. I've done a little looking online and have a few questions for you 3rd gen guys.
What year did they start putting emission stuff on the cummins?
I thinking about a Mega, what year was it introduced?
Anything I should look out for?
Thanks.

Mega's with 5.9's use an internal EGR system that is delivered by whats called a "Third Event" The injectors are electronically controlled by the computer and tells them when to fire, three times per piston cycle.

The 2003's, 2004's up to 04.5 use a two event injection delivery.

The 6.7's 07.5 and later use the three event injection cycle and have external EGR and DPF and other things to achieve emmision goals, loss of fuel mileage.

I think Mega's came in 06. If that's not correct the next poster will correct it.

I would stay away from the 06's. The AC system is really poor for the large cab the mega has. They also have internal problems in the Air handling system. (falling apart) The 06 is also prone to #4 injection tube breakage.

There are a couple TSB's for the 48RFE Tranny. Not to expensive to fix if you get something out of warranty.

Lots of emerging problems with the common rail system as it effects the injectors. Additional filtration at 2 microns is going to be needed along with a drop to <5 micron fuel filters in the truck.

The filtration problems are for all common rail engines. 2003 and later.

07 may be a better choice with the 5.9 for the A/C system. 07.5 has the 6.7 and all the big time emmisions stuff. A much better tranny is attached to the 07.5 6.7. Its a six speed and not a 4 speed like the 5.9's have.

Choose wisely!

My compliments on the last post. Very informative and well written. I do have 1 thing to add. There isn't really a problem with the common rail system (it's on virtually all new on-highway diesel engines), it's just in the poor Dodge filtration as previously stated. Upgrade the filtration and the common rails are very good and reliable. I would stay away from the '06s as previously stated, they have many quirks you can read on here about. Sorry for the long post.

Thanks for the responses. Dave, you gave me just the sort of information I was looking for. I'm in no hurry to buy, but I'll be looking around. Guess I'll be coming to the 3rd gen forums more now.

Man, my paid for '01 keeps looking better. Trucks have gotten expensive since the last time I looked.

Dave, I'm in north LA. Near Ruston. I've always found it funny that alot of people come here for Mardi Gras, While alot of us go on vaction during Mardi Gras. I"ll be in Florida next week. Taking the kids to Disney.

Once again thanks for the info. If I find something that interests me, I'll be asking more questions for sure.

I kinda disagree on new truck pricing. We paid low 30s for our new 99 although it was ordered, I thought it was high enough. I just bought a leftover 08 new for 34,000. Both quad cabs 4x4 almost fully loaded. Honestly new diesels in the mid to high 30s isn't TOO bad. But then again I vouched for a new truck that sat for at least a year to save that 5000. My 2 cents.

Jeez even if I could get low 30's for mine being a quad cab with 60k on it I'd probably be happy. I can get a new 2010 Laramie for 48 if I saw the price correctly looking earlier.

I use to be an CG Marine Inspector before I retired in 94. Did the rigs and platforms offshore and worked in the shipyards when not offshore. Lived in Morgan City. Was down there for 8 years.

The real reason for going back during Mardi Gras is to Eat Crawfish, Parades are OK, Crawfish is better. I take my 90qt pot and burner and fix emup.

Looks like its going to be warm over hear next week, well at least to the next cold front gets here and says hi for 24 hours and disapears. Could be rainy.

Have a good trip over here. Diesel is about 2.80 over here, 2.72 at Wal-marts in some places. Fort Wilderness should be full. All the RV's will be decorated.

If you want to see some trucks over here, head for Sandford, Fl to Gibsons truck world. If you can't find one there, your not looking hard. There on the web.

Holy crap I don't know where you are looking but that sounds like new leftover prices to me. I paid 34 something new for mine late in 06 as a leftover but its just a quadcab. Shop around you can do better.

Mid to high 20's is the norm for 06-07 5.9 4x4 megas. You'll see dealers with higher price tags on them as they can talk you into a new one easier that way but for the most part you can buy a 50-80k mile truck for around 25-28. Been ready to drop the hammer on a 06-07 mega myself and a 07 3500 6.7 loaded laramie 6spd manual 4x with 85k may be in my driveway soon for a tad under 23. Not much is selling these days, new or used and there are a lot of great deals out there right now. Dont let dealer prices fool ya, Most of the private party trucks for sale are from people who have to sell, and i would rather buy from a seller who needs to be relieved from there payment than to buy from a dealer who marks there prices up so close to a new one that you'll probably by the new truck as its the better deal. If your worried about financing go to lendingtree.com, you will get a much better rate for a used truck than a dealer will give you.
6.7 trucks are the ones that have the emmisions stuff on em, dont be scared of em, the bugs have been worked out of em as they have been out for 4 model years now and if anything you may have to make a trip to a good dealer for an update if the truck has yet to recieve it.
Dont read to far into the negative stuff you read about the 6.7. Granted it is a different animal than the 5.9 we all grew to love, but has proven itself to be the better of the two in a short period, and is, by far, the best oil burner you can purchase in a new truck.
