Tailgate falling open in traffic.

Searched the site and found no other posts on this one? My 2006 Ram tailgate is just falling open in traffic while driving! As you can imagine this is pretty distressing! Of all the trucks I've driven or owned I've never seen this before? The tailgate seems to be positively shut- but will fall open later? Anyone have any troubleshooting ideas on this? Had the truck close to 3 years and it just started happening about two weeks ago. Thanks!

It happened to me on a couple of occasions recently, but mainly after I hit a bump in the road. I could close the tailgate, but the mechanism wasn't latching properly, and I could pull it open without much effort.

I ended up cleaning a bunch of buildup off the mechanism on each end and lubricating them with white lithium grease. I've had no problems since.

No experience but first guess is to focus o the tailgate latch mechanism. I' thinking you lost a spring or a tension device that keeps the hook engaged on the post.

I agree it sounds like either there is a foreign object obstructing the latch or broken part in the assembly.
