My 04 3500 SRW does this too and I just press the pedal a few more times and it shifts. I think this is something that will be a real hassle to get Chrysler to fix.

Yeah...mine does it occasionally also. Service dept. says it is a common problem, and they will fix it when I come in for recalls. He says there is a TSB regarding the "interlock cable??" Hope to get it fixed, because you are right, it is anoying as heck.

Interesting to see this come up. I just bought a 2005 a few weeks ago. I have had a few times where I put it in gear and it wasnt in gear. I am new to the truck and figured I was moving the shifter too fast.
Yesterday I stopped at a store. Gonna run in real fast and let the truck idle to keep the wife and kiddos warm. Opened the door to get out and the horn went off beeping like a car alarm (I dont have an alarm) and the PND21 light on the dash started flashing to the beat of the horn. Shut the door and it stopped. Truck was in Park. But it was like the selector wasnt. Moved the selector a back and forth and all was well.
Any ideas?

Ive seeen this before on 3rd gen dodge diesel autos. On one of our company truck. The problem was in the transmission. the detent ball wore a groove where it rested and caused linkage to bind up. Had to take to tranny shop and to replace internal parts. Dont remember exactly what. Ill try to look it up in our eq files. Shop owner said he as seen it before.

I had a similar issue. 2005 stuck in park, but I could force it into gear and once it popped and was past park it would shift smoothly in all other positions. I was thinking it was the shift cable, found a section under the dash that could be adjusted. I monkeyed around with it for a while but didn't fix it. So I disconnected the cable from the shifter and it was smooth, then I disconnected the cable from the transmission and it was smooth, so I knew the problem was in the transmission. I was thinking it was a bad brake safety switch or something but I trusted my transmission guy. As soon as I told him what was going on and all that I had tried he explained to me that there is a rod on top of the Valve Body and there could be a few issues with that. Namely, since I had been forcing it into gear I very well could have bent it, but either way he said it sounded like that was the issue.
I left it with him and he had it repaired in a few hours (he went ahead and serviced the trans while he was there too). It shifts like normal again and actually shifts better. I was experiencing a bad engine rev and delayed shift issue when trying to pass. I thought is was the TC going out, but now it's not doing that so there had to have been some sort of a tie in. Anyway, I don't know 100% of the details, but there was a seal that was bad and the shift rod was not riding smoothly in the VB. So I don't know if the seal held the rod centered or stable or what, but he Rod was not bent and the only part that was replaced was the seal. He said it was a common issue with dodges.
I hope this helps anyone else with this issue. Parts and Labor set me back $347...

Just a plain ole guy
Have a buddy that HAD on 04 that did this. A local trans shop found an issue in the valve body. There was a kit they ordered just for this issue. i don't know the exact details on the kit# or where from, but it fixed his issue. Might be worth looking into.

There is a TSB listed here: TSB 21-023-05 that addresses this very issue.
