Steering overhaul... Need thoughts

So I am pushing 230,000 miles on the old girl and the steering shows it. granted they haven't been easy miles, she is used as my adventure rig.

Name: IMG_20140318_150159_044.jpg

So with that, my steering has started to become very hard at slow speeds and making a noise under the dash that goes away when I slightly turn the wheel or touch the brakes. Think I have heard this is the pressure line from the pump to the steering box that has failed internally?

While I was digging around I have also notice the box is leaking and has a lot of play, it has wandered for awhile now, and I have the old style steering that is pretty worn out...

Thinking of ordering the following:

Redhead rebuilt steering box
high pressure line
08.5 upgrade steering linkage kit
new pitman arm
bilsien stabilizer

Any thoughts on these parts? This hose going to fix the noise?

Thanks!

A quick search would've shown you that's the correct part number....https://www.google.com/search?q=5212...ckresource.com

Add ball joints and track bar to that list.

Why get so pissy? You do realize this is a quiet site, right? 10 years ago it was the cat's ****. There are 10+ years of posts to search....you couldn't find anything relating to your issues to give you confidence to buy the part to try to fix the issue? Here's the search that brings up threads that confirm what you are experiencing: https://www.google.com/#q=high+press...ckresource.com

Nice truck! How has your fiberglass shell held up with the weight? Hope you got everything sorted out.

did do a search, that's where I got the list that I posted. But as you said, some info is 10+ years old and not always current, best, information anymore...

few years ago everyone was having issues with the 08.5 steering upgrade, so I wanted to check. Few years ago everyone thought the borgsen box was great, and that has shown to not be great.

not really pissy, just disappointed in what used to be one of my favorite sites.

Track bar already done (carli) and ball joints as well (xrf) but might switch to carli when I get under there and inspect everything.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the updated numbers!

I have been told to switch to the new mopar pitman arm to help the new linkage angles. with up to a 3" lift. (I have carli 2.5" coils) so I should update the pitman arm correct?

Thanks! It actually has held up very well. I have been pleasantly surprised, I did add a few more c-clamps for good measure, but so far so good with the heavy spare, 10 gallons of extra fuel, highlift and other equipment. I had to redesign the rack mounts to lower it down about 2.5" and that really helped with the top heavy feel and wind resistance...

Correct! I have a Carli system in my 03 including coils and new late model Mopar steering box. I used the new pitman arm as recommended by George at 8 Lug Truck Gear.

so got to looking through my records and I looks like 2 years ago I replaced this PS line once already. I thought it was a different one but looks like its the one...

The old one was leaking, and that makes me wonder if the previous owner or the dealer removed the liner out of it causing the leak? The new one was a Mopar OEM replacement and is making the noise that everyone seems to get. the old line never did...

Thoughts?

Anyone had any problems with the gates brand replacement?

Wow, thanks for your LATE and worthless post... Thought this thread had already moved past this and back to useful information.

Not sure my post warranted being called names, especially from a moderator, but oh well...

Back on topic, has anyone had issues with the Gates PS hose, or is OEM the way to go?

Bitching because you don't get fast enough answers don't help your cause any. This is better than calling tech support and getting Betty in Russia.

You can use a -6 an line and fittings. You have to find a way to support it though
