soon to be diesel owner needs help
I am going to be looking into a newer Dodge crewcab 4x4 cummins in the next couple months. I am a true blue ford man but I am dissapointed in the stroke so the only logical thing to do is buy a cummins!! I know I want an automatic tranny too. What are some of the things I should be looking for. Are the autos 4 or 5 spd? I have seen a couple of 03s I like and one 04. Are there any differences between the years? Also when I get it I am ordering either wheels n tires, or exhaust, edge tunner, and cold air intake. Any certain brands for aftermarket? Thanks for the help!
Welcome to DTR!
There are a gazillion posts here, you can search by generation (you'll be looking at 3rd gen's, of course), by drivetrain posts, performance posts, etc. -
Enjoy, and let us know what you end up with -

just curios to see why you would say buy 05 or newer for auto trans? the same 48re trans was found in every truck starting 1-1-03 and all HO's starting before that
If you search the site you will find that people like the 04 with the 305/555 and other say go with the 04.5 with 325/600 and just take out the cat. Just stay away from an early 03 with the 47re tranny.

Welcome to the forum. I'm in the same boat, fixin to get an 03-04 CTD soon. I too have been a Ford SD man in the past, but I've come over from the dark side. I'm presently driving a gasser until I find my ride. I was pulling a tandem axle trailer with a bobcat on it just yesterday and my idiot box was reading between 5-6 mpg; what a joke! I'm just waiting to get my Cummins!!!
I feel your pain; in the past I was forced to drive F**d diesels, but under the terms of the Geneva Convention I was able to open my own business and make sensible decisions - such as buy Dodge/Cummins!
I was die hard ford, as well, since childhood!
But, since they had so many problems with the 6.0, I couldn't justify spending money on their problems!
I have been loosely following DC for 4 or 5 years, then intensely for the last 2 years. Yes, they have their share of problems. Mostly AC recirc and blend doors; occasional injector problems; short ball joint life time. But, those problems are a MUCH shorter list than ford's problems, since the 6.0 launch.
