Replacement stereo? I just confused myself

Well I though I had it figured out but the more I read the more I am confused. I have a 03 with a stock Infinity system that seems to be giving it up. So I wanted to replace it hopefully with Infinity Reference or Kappa Series. My only problem now is whether to get a 2 or 3 way speaker. What is the difference and what do I need to get? Would I be better off with a different brand speaker?

If your only concern is the speakers, I'd suggest a good Kappa 3-way in the front doors, and the biggest Kappa 2-way you can fit in the back doors (6.5" I think). If you're really serious about clear sound, there are a few brands (pioneer being one of them) that offer detachable or aimable tweeters, which you can place or aim to direct the high frequencies, but at any appreciable speed, they get covered by road noise anyway, so I personally don't think it's worth the time or the money. I like to use Crutchfield's sizing/fitment chart, and then look for the individual components at www.mysimon.com.

Hope I helped a bit. If you've got any questions, let me know, I've done a few of these in the 2nd Gen, and I don't believe the wiring changed that much.

Ha well yes speakers are my only concern this time around, I went way overboard in my last truck and Im trying to be sane about this one. Thank you for the help though that is exaclty what I needed to know. Any imput on an aftermarket flip up screen? I would like to replace my factory deck with the screen and still be able to use my steering wheel controls. Is this easily done with just an adapter?

I've never been a fan of the LCD/TFT screens. The cold weather I generally live in makes them slow to respond and causes a bunch of dead pixels rather quickly. As far as the steering wheel controls working with another radio, I don't think it's possible. Most of the aftermarket remotes are infrared and your controls are actually microswitches, but I've never tried it, so hopefully someone else can chime in with a more educated answer.

if you like lots of low end and are'nt going with subs, go with the infinity kappa 2 ways and if your deck has a mid setting keep it flat at 0.

2 ways have a woofer and tweeter while 3 ways add a mid. aside from being a little cheaper, 2 ways tend to give you better bass response.

Well all I plan on doing is replacing my front 2 6x9s, and leaving the factory deck. What would sound the best? Is it a direct replacement? And do my factory tweeters in the dash still work with kappas?

Oh and one more question, how hard is it to pull the door apart to change out the speakers? Is it something I can do or would I be better off having a place like car toys install them?

This is the new screen I have now. It is awesome and puts out Dolby Digital 5.1. It controls my system very well and has an awesome equalizer. The navigation is also a plus. As for speakers, anything you like will work good, if you add a 4ch amp to them you will get much better tone out of it. I like having my Memphis componenets because they have a adjustable and removable tweeter, it really helps in aiming the music level to your preference.

Well has anyone replaced their own front speakers? How difficult is it? Any tips or forewarnings?

To get to your front speakers should be fairly easy. Just remove the screws that hold the plastic door trim in place. The screws are located along the bottom of the door, one up there next to the mirrors on the inside, and one behind the inside door handle. After removing all those screws you need to lift up on the plastic trim and then panel should come off.

Or better yet look at the JimmieJammers.com site for door lock protection. They will show you in their tutioral how to take your door panel off and access the lock mechanism if you ever want to go that far. Just look at the following tutorial photos 5-9 to show you how to take your plastic door trim off too access your front doors. They even show how to remove the back door panels too.

I have been thinking about buying these for my truck as I heard of some other TDR member that have had their trucks broke into by people prying the door handles up.

factory deck will not provide enough power for any decent aftermarket speakers. imo get an aftermarket deck and a good 4 channel amp.

They will power them good to a certain volume, which would probably be too low to hear while driving. The stock radios are very underpowered and have no parametric eq, only basic controls, you couldn't even tune it close if you wanted to. Aftermarket stereo (or at least a 4ch amp with a rca crossover) will get you better quality, but that stock radio will be holding back on the tuning. Go aftermarket, and if you want extreme tuning capabilities, get you an external equalizer and mount it out of the way.
