Pregnant idea?????

Want to install an auxillary fuel tank where the spare tire is stored. Thinking about building a hinge setup for the left tail light assy. Fill spout for the tank would be behind the tail light and the light would swing our for access to the fill spout.

Comments, hints, suggestions??? Anyone tried anything like this?

There is a tank that fits in place of the spare tire. I'll see if I can find you a link

These guys have what you are looking ofr. It is a U shaped tank that holds an additional 12-15 gallons.

A flip down license plate like old cars used to have might be easier to fab.

On my old '92 CTD I installed a Ramcharger tank where the spare was. Because the frames are similar is was a pretty straight forward swap. Tank was bigger than the original on that truck, 35gal if I remember right.... Had AWESOME range with the two tanks. Went on a week long trip thru AB and BC hauling the camper and Jeep and never had to fill up.

It would be the right size to fit at the back of a 3rd gen but fabbing crossemembers for it might be tough, its a weird shape.

Wouldn't that introduce some safety concerns, if you were hit from behind?

Here's a swing out filler neck behind the taillight on a first gen. He added a rear tank as well.

...but what does pregnant have anything to do with this? [laugh]

Ford had aft axle tanks for eons. we used an old 45 gallon TranFlow ford tank into a 2nd gen dodge. took a little work. used to put the second fueling door in the side of the bed. body shop charged something like 600 to cut and add the fuel door and paint that side of the bed. well worth it when you can get 80 gallons on fuel into the truck. used the ford selector valve and reverse polarity diesel switch looked clean and the selector valve also swiched between the two sending units for you so wiring into the cab is minimal. resistance was different from the ford sending unit to the dodge but easily overcome

Maybe you should checkout NewDodgeParts.com and look under OEM Collision parts catalog for the 2007-08 Cab and Chassis. If I remember correctly they have the rear mounted tank in the the spare tire area.

Here is a link to the 2008 DodgeBodyBuilders.com site which shows information on the auxiliary fuel tank and filler hose locations on a 2008 Cab and Chassis. (http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/200.../dcdmffpla.pdf) Now all you have to do is mod the filler hose.

No more than with a cab and chassis. 06 CCs have a rear tank.

"pregnant idea" Have heard this all my life, 63 years. Refers to an idea that probably goofy, unrealistic or otherwise not worth pursuing.
