Need help with new to me purchase

Hey all, I'm usually on here as a 1st Gen 'r but it's time to sell that truck and upgrade.
I'm thinking either an '06 or '07 5.9L, or, should I move up to the 6.7L ?
I'm on my 3rd 1st gen & have had 1 2nd gen but know nothing really about the 3rd's. Anything I should be on the look out for?
I'm going tomorrow (4hr drive one way) to look at an '06 Laramie Mega-Cab 4x with a std trans. Any common issues with these?

Thanks in advance

You'll be happy with the 06. I would stay away from the 6.7 because the emissions stuff and looks like the EPA is tightening the noose even more.

As for the 06 some have electrical issues but usually nothing major. Things like broken wires in the boots for the door opening causing windows and locks to not work. Interior lights acting goofy which is usually fixed by disconnecting the batteries for an hour or so.
Another issue is the #4 metal injector line from the high pressure rail to the injector can break because the bolt in the clamp comes loose. Bad design from the factory. There is an upgraded line now that is dealer only.
Some have had ball joint issues but that is far less common.
Since it is a manual trans the only issue is the dual mass flywheel. They can come apart and make lots of noise. Some have come apart at 50k miles and some have gone 150k miles. I have 118k on mine and so far ok (knock on wood!!)

Prefect, automotive electrical is right up my alley.
Thanks for the feedback

3rd gens are also famous for blend door, recirc door and mode door issues. So far on mine, only the recirc door has been replaced, knockin' on wood!

If your planning on any tuner just plan on a southbend clutch also.

Don't forget about the LP issues as well. The trans if a G56 manual will also need to be adressed......the flywheel will come apart and cause all kinds of problems. Will need to be replaced with a single mass flywheel.

Replacing a dual mass with a single tomorrow morning....the dual mass came loose and is shaking the truck like a hula dancer on speed!!![laugh][laugh]

What is the "LP issues" ?

raggmann 01-31-2013 07:58 PM

What about an auto trans truck?
What should I watch out for with those?

LP= Lift Pump The newer ones are a little better because they're located in the tank and push the fuel rather than pull it but they are still prone to fail.

Having worked at the dealer until '06 you'd think I woulda remembered that. Oh well.
It's a no go going to look at the one truck today. The seller was a jerk on the phone last night so I'll keep looking.

Thanks again guys.

Is there anything to check, or a way to tell, if an auto trans is going bad?
Other than the typical burnt smell to the oil.

Yeah, get on it and see if it slips... Drive it for a good bit to get trans to warm up and pay attention to it when it shifts.

My 07/5.9 has had no LP issues. I think they got it right at the end of the 5.9 run. I updated my 48RE w/ a shift kit, billet front servo & accumulator, billet front band strut & anchor, and GM Slenoid conversion. I updated the front damper/steering linkage (factory update), installed a steering box stabilizer, and installed a GDP 2m fuel filtration system. I installled a free-flow Donaldson muffler. I think these updates address the major weak pts of the 3rd gen rigs. Working on a performance tune next....EFI LIVE.[coffee]

Ditto ont he SB clutch if you're adding any power to it.
My 07 5.9 has been relatively trouble free in 105k mi on it.
1 - #4 injector line, 1 - steering box, 1-clutch (known issue).
Biggest problem I've had is keeping steering/hydro boost pumps in it. Run 285s or 33" mudders or AT's. 1st one went at about 60k mi. Chalked it up to the wife doing a 10pt turn 4x a day getting the truck in and out of the garage. Put in a Napa re-man, lasted about 30k and gave up. Replaced with another re-man pump, lasted about 3k and gave up. Now on it's 4th one.
Dodge dlr here wants fricking $800 for the "updated" pump. That's alot considering they're free and about an hour now to replace. Hopefully I'll get a good one again.
Not sure why I have the world's shattiest luck with them, but that's been the only real "problem" with the truck so far.
