Need to drop fuel tank-but its full

I made a mistake today & filled the truck right up, but unfortunatly, I forgot that I will need to lower the fuel tank to install my espar diesel heater this sunday.

since I don't plan on dumping 35gal of fuel, & I cannot burn it that fast, & I don't have anywhere to transfer the fuel to, I need suggestions as to how to manage the tank.

I was thinking to put a piece of plywood about the same length as the tank & then placing a floor jack under it...allowing me to lower it slowly. With this espar, I don't think I need to mess around with it too much, just Tee in a fitting on the return line, therefore I shouldn't need to drop the tank right to the ground.

Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

Just tee into the vent line near the filler neck like the GDP kit does. No need to drop the tank then! I think you can buy that fitting separately too. If not....a little time and ingenuity ......you could make your own!?

Many people believe it's easier to lift the box off the truck than to remove the fuel tank. You just need a couple of buddies.

I use to lift the bed on my 98 GMC by myself. Used a come-a-long.

Lowering a full tank is going to be a pain. When I lowered mine I only had a few gallons in, used a piece of plywood, and it still required a lot of wrestling from me and my Dad. Try to get most of the diesel out any way you can or put off putting the heater in.

One more thing. When using the jack around the truck to lower/raise the tank, be sure to put some nerf material or tape some old rags/tshirts around the lower part of the jack handle where it will meet the lower part of the bed. After you bump the side of the truck a few times you'll thank me!

I learned the hard way on that, but only have the slightest dent, I have trouble finding it now. Still it really made me mad knowing I did that to my new truck!

My dealer had to remove my tank with aprox 20 gallons of fuel in it. They tried putting a jumper wire in somewhere to use the pump to get the fuel out.
They called me saying they needed to keep the truck for a few extra days because they shorted something out and had to order a new one but it was not in stock so there would be a delay.
five star service at it's best!!

thanks for the replys. I was kinda hopin that I would be able to get this thing underway this weekend.....I guess I'll probably just wait till I suck it dry.....I'll go for some drive this weekend instead...I'll wait & see.
I'm only one of only a few guys I know who burn diesel & tranfering it isn't really high on my list of fun. Giving away a hundred bucks sucks edit.. I'm sure you would all give me a hand in gettin rid of this fuel problem.

When I put an in-tank lift pump in mine I'm going to use my Sears motorcycle jack. It'll handle the weight and will provide a wider base for stability, especially if I put some 2x6's between it and the tank.

Now me, I would take the easy route and delay my repairs for another week so I could burn the fuel! LOLOL Unfortunately my 07 5.9 gets good mileage so it might be more like delaying 3 weeks! LOLOL

my son and I are dropping his tank to install the vent kit. He has just over 1/4 tank we'll see how much fun that is first. mine has 3/4 tank need to burn fuel before trying that. make sure you have an extra pair of hands never know if something slips. safety first.
