My newest Mod...

Just got done installing some auxillary reverse lights on my truck.. I don't know about you guys, but the stock reverse lights SUCK when trying to back up at night, and I wired them directly to the battery, since I have to often hook up my trailer at night, these will help me see what Im doing. Lights and switch cost a grand total of $25 at pepboys... Gotta love the cheap mods.. Here are a couple pics:

Switch location:

Lights mounted on rear bumper:

The hardest part was finding a place on the firewall to feed the wires into the cab. After some backwards thinking, I found a grommet and squeezed em through. That, and I ran out of wire, and didn't have enough to run from the rear of the truck all the way up to the front. After a quick trip to the hardware store, problem solved. If anyone likes to see at night while backing up, I recommend these! I have to back into my driveway and often times its at night, so I know these will help!

Don't tell anyone, but the switch is actually a LITTLE too close to the drivers side vent there.. and it doesn't QUITE allow the vent/headlight switch assembly to click in QUITE all the way. Its really close, but it was a measurement mistake on my part Other than that, I really like it, and unless you are really really looking for it, you can't notice that its not clipped in.

Me likes. I have a long, dark and scary driveway to back down too. I could use that mod. Better than training my lab to stand back there with a flash light!

Well, I got a wild hair up my butt, and decided that I wanted the lights to come on when I shifted the 6 spd into reverse, so 10 minutes with a test light, and a jumper wire to the reverse wire, and wala, now I can activate then with the switch or by putting the truck in reverse

Scott,

Do you need some sort of device (diode?) that ensures you're not backfeeding 12v into the reverse wiring when you hit the button on the dash? Or even more, is there an issue if the switch is on AND you then go into reverse?

Check out this thread:

I could be wrong here but I think this might be an issue....

I just checked everything, and it doesnt appear to be backfeeding into the reverse wiring.. and with the switch on, and the truck in reverse, everything seems to be working just fine.

EDIT:
I did just check everything with a test light, and sure enough, its backfeeding into the reverse lights when I just have the switch on. This does not bother me, as I usually used the reverse lights on the truck to see what I was doing while hooking up my trailer, but I may eventually put a relay on there, or a diode to keep it from doing that. For now I intend to leave it alone, unless someone can give me a good reason not too.

Good stuff, my KC's use the same switch, I mounted it just to the left of the factory headlight switch. The trim piece is just the right size.

No wires running, or switches on the interior of my truck. All aux. lighting, including back-up / no high beam behind me lights(pics in gallery), are operated remote controlly via a key fob. I should've done a "how-to", but forgot about it. I still have to take and post pics of the remote control unit I built and located under the hood.

My Pacbrake and electric solenoid valve for aux. fuel tank will also be controlled by the same unit and key fob....once they're installed of course. Pacbrake has been shipped - haven't found an aux. fuel tank / tool ox combo for the Megacab yet.

I like that. The new recon light has a reverse light function. just wondered if it can be wired to a switch or only for reverse

it's not that hard, just time consuming to get everything into a small enough package to fit in the engine compartment without being in the way.

There's a separate wire for the white reverse lights - so, a separate switch can be used if you wish.

A dremel on the trim piece would probably give you the clearance you need. That install looks real nice. Maybe a spot for some of the guys looking for a spot for their smoke switch!
