Mounted LED lights on 03 tow mirrors (w/ pics and procedure)

I've been lurking around here for a while, but you don't see many posts from me because I only have a Hemi. I suffer from a condition known as Cummins-envy and I hope that my Hemi will someday turn into a Cummins. I thought I would share what I did with these lights because it would also work on the diesels.

I finally found some LED lights that would enable use of turn signals and running lights on the same light. They come with three wires: white(ground), brown(running lights), green(turn signal). One side has amber color, while the other has red. They have two light levels, dim for running lights and bright for turn signal. They are kind of large (6"L x 1.25"W x 1"H"), but they blend in pretty good under the mirror arm. I set out to mount them on the outside of the mirror when in the down position. In the towing position, they would be on the bottom of the mirror. I could not figure out how to get the wiring routed through the arm and housing to the actual mirror. It would also require recessing the light into the mirror housing since the outside edge is curved. So I settled for mounting them under the arm. These lights are plenty bright, even though they only have 4 LEDs per side. At first I was reluctant to install them after opening the box because the lenses are crystal clear. I guess I was expecting a smoke lens or some opacity. You can see the circuit board and writing on it where the wires go in, but it's so small that it's not noticeable once they're mounted.

Here is the link to the lights on Ebay:

I did not take many pictures during the install, but it was pretty basic (just time consuming). I spent between 7-8 total hours, the biggest killer was trying to figure out how to get the wiring the through the mirrors. Here's somewhat of a step-by-step that should save a person some time:

--Disconnect battery and detach the fuse box ("integrate power module"). 1 bolt and 1 plastic screw/insert, then slide toward the engine to remove from slots in the battery box.
--Tip the fuse box over on its side to gain access to the wiring underneath.
--Using blue wire taps, splice into the following wires as shown in the photo:
light green = left front turn signal
light green/tan = right front turn signal
pink/violet = front left park lamps (doesn't matter which park lamp you tie into)
I only spliced one wire into the park lamps and ran it to the driver side mirror. Then I spliced into this wire and ran another wire to the passenger mirror.
--Run the wires behind the battery box inside the fender. I did not go through the fire wall. Instead, I ran a stiff wire down the through the fender and through the thick foam liner that somewhat seals the fender off to the cab near the front door hinges. Kind of hard to explain, but I pulled the wires through there and then drilled a hole through the rubber grommet where the existing wires enter the door. You can see the wires when you the open the door, but I don't mind.
--Remove the door panel (1 screw up near mirror, 1 screw by door handle, 2 screws along lower edge of panel). Panel lifts straight up, then off (after taking off door handle).
--Remove door handle (1 torx-headed bolt with the head pointing toward the front of the truck just behind the handle itself).
--Disconnect mirror plug and unbolt mirror (3 nuts). The mirror will not come off yet---there are 2 tabs on the plastic mirror plug that must be squeezed in order for the plug to come out of the hole in the door. You must dig through the foam near the plug to see the tabs.
--Remove door speaker in order to reach into the door to pull the wire through the rubber grommet and route the wire up the door with the existing wires going to the mirror.
--I spliced the light wires near the mirror plug-in using crimp butt-connectors once I had the lights put on the mirrors and the mirrors reinstalled.
--With the heated, electric tow mirrors there are 3 empty pins in the plug-in. Carefully drill out those 3 empty pins to create one large hole to run the three wires through the plug and into the mirror. You have to drill out the male and female parts of the plug. I used 16 ga. wire and they just barely sqqeezed through the holes in the plug.
--On the detached mirror, run three wires through the drilled out plug and into the mirror housing. Use new pieces of wire 2' long (not the ones already spliced in near the fuse box.)
--Remove the round access cover on the bottom of the mirror arm and route the wires to follow the existing wires up through the pivot point of the arm. I had to use screw drivers to pry the plastic mirror arm cover apart on the top and bottom. Once you start prying, several pieces of plastic will break (must be the tabs holding it together), but I could not find any other way. The cover snapped back together fine at the end.
--From there, run the wires back down to the bottom of the arm and pull them out through the seam in the cover so you can connect them onto the light eventually.
--Drill a 1/2" hole in the bottom of the mirror arm for the wires and protruding back part of LED light to mount flush.
--Drill two small holes for stainless screws (not included) to mount the light. I located the light as far out on the end of the arm as possible, with room to drill and screw the light to the plastic. These lights have more writing on one side of the circuit board than the other. The side with the most writing is the amber side and should face forward.
--Splice wires onto light using crimp butt-connectors and slip all the wiring back into the mirror arm cover.
--Remount the mirror and attach the nuts.
--Before connecting the mirror plug, you must run the wires through the male plug (on the door) that was drilled out. Then connect the plug. It will be a tight fit with three 16 ga. wires running through both plugs that you're trying to get lined up.
Put everything back together and you're done.

Thanks for the update. I like them and price seems fair.
We have members with engines other than Cummins.
It's cool to share.

Thanks for sharing! Now we need a wiring diagram for 06+ I got these though a little smaller than what you used I figured they would work. I also will put them as far out on the arm as possible once I find out what wires to tap...
