Question May buy a 2003 ETC

My son is looking at purchasing a 2003 ETC, Q/C, auto, Sb, 4x4 Laramie with approx. 40,000 km (24,000 miles). The truck is in very good condition-looks like new, but we are planning on having it checked out. The truck was involved in an accident. I have copy of the repair bill and basically the front bumper and attachments were replaced.

What sort of things should we look for that are known to be problems or likely cause problems?

I am new to the third gen trucks so I have limited experience. Your advice and comments are appreciated.

You may notice that many of these trucks have air conditioning complaints.

Within the past month I bought the truck in my sig. The selling dealer (local friendly Ford man) has had it back for a condenser, evaporator, and we still have a compressor not working situation. After the evaporator replacement, the AC was cool on driver side but warm on passenger. At this point, everyone is frustated.

Might also want to see which tranny you have, I think some late '03s had the 48re. Some of the veterans can tell you.

Other than the AC issues I love the truck, but I live in the Gulf Coast area, and a quirky AC can make or break your love affair with a truck. We may have to trade again if we can't get this issue solved.

Good luck.

Mine is an early 03 with the 47re. All the transmissions would bennifit from a tourque converter and valve body I have had no problems with it or the air. Granted I dont put on a lot of miles but have had no problems so far. Changeing the oil and fuel filter on a regular basis is important.

Thanks for the replies. The truck has the 47re tranny. We will definitely check to make sure that the air is working properly. A 143 point vehicle inspection has been done and the only 2 negatives found are:
1) the muffler, exhaust pipe, tail pipe and related hangers/clamps are rusty
2) some oil leakage from either the valve cover, cylinder head or rear seal

The rust on the exhaust system I am not concerned about. As far as the oil leakage goes, if it is minor, is this something to be concerned about?
