Aluminum wheels will loosen no matter how you do it ..... at least that is my experience.
I have two sets of 17" Aluminums .... one is racing tires. In the summer I would change them couple of times a month.
I have a cordless impact wrench (very handy at the track) that will take them to 95-100 psi.
Then I torque them twice, always criscross, to 150 psi. Could have sworn I read that number somewhere, yrs ago??
They still need re-torque after a few hundred miles. Maybe it's just me, due to frequent change out??

I have always used 135 ft/lbs. I have never found a loose lug nut but I usually go around the truck twice with the torque wrench after rotating the tires. After 7,500 miles, they are all super tight when I do the next rotation.

By hand, it's tight as you can get with a 4 way wrench or 1/2" breaker bar (except little cars, I don't crank the snot out of them).
With impact wrench, steel or alum wheels, for the last 15 years (except for roadside flats), run all teh nuts up on low setting (get's them barely snug and centered if necessary). Zap them all once on med setting (max 150 ftlbs ???) in a criss cross pattern. Zap them all again, x pattern until the impact stops or almost stops turning it. Never re-torqued the lugs. Only wheel I've ever lost was one that someone took most of the lugs off of. Never found out who vandalized my car.
Will agree, all I have ever used was good & tight and have never had a rim come off.

Hand tightening is fine for people with good mechanical aptitude but there are a lot of people that don't have a good feel for things and for them a torque spec is a must. I'm leery of electric impacts though, they don't have the torque that a real air gun has and you have to give them considerably longer to work properly.

7 cars for three race seasons, 5 cars for three 25hour races, no lost wheels

Yep, never really trust the impact wrenches. Watch to many people who do not know what they doing just hammer away at the nuts and break a few studs or bolts. This also goes for Head Studs or Dowels. Never lost a head because of the way I torque my bolts down. Doing it in stages allow for adjustment or correction before final torque is applied and sealant is set if needed.

For my 06 the manual calls for 135 ft lbs, a little more probably ok. I will be checking mine more often.
