Lowering Rear End
 

I would like to lower the rear end of my 09 3500 DRW. It would give me a better set up with my trailer. I see that the axle it has spacers between it and the spring pack and they appear to be removable. Taking all three out would reduce the height by about 1". On the face of it it looks like a simple mod. Has anyone have any experience with such a change?

I had the back of my truck done for about 40k miles without any problems. I even was able to fit the 35's but they were really close to hitting in the front fender liners while turning.

Thanks. the link didn't work, but a search got me the info you had pointed me to. I'll have to figure out if I'll be bottoming out a lot before I proceed. My pin weight is not that high for my current trailer. I bought the DRW because I might go to a trailer with a heavier pin weight in a few years. Mama wouldn't want me changing the truck again!

I wonder what you have to do with a single rear wheel 2WD? I have searched here and it seems like the only game in town is AIM, and everyone says how bad the product is...It's a shackle kit. Here is how mine is set up, it sits so high in the back it is funny looking, I cant stand the look of the 2WD jacked up so high with all that room in the wheelwell. My buddy has a 4x4 and mine sits almost as high as his does in the rear.

You can always fill the bed with cement. Has that ever been discussed before?

Yeah, pretty close, some smart guy suggested going to the local gravel yard and having it filled up. Not really the solution I am looking for though!

Awhile back I remember seeing somebody put Don Thuren's adjustable lift shackles on a 2wd to lower it and level the truck.

I removed mine a few months ago. It wasn't that hard, just very time consuming.

Removed my spacers when brand new and I tow a trailer with 3000lb pin weight and no issues in 44,000 kms.

There are no spacers to remove on this truck.

I removed mine, not to long ago, its a 4X4 which is what the original thread was for. I could not get my 5er low enough to ride level. I tried combinations of pin box and hitch adjustments to where I was afraid of hitting the bed. I went to the dealer and asked them to take the rear spacers out, and they said "No it will cause severe drive line vibration". I measured drive line angle in three places, pumpkin, shaft and shaft at the transfer case. I then removed them myslef, no change, not even one degree in any angle, lowered the rear almost 2 inches. My 5er is so close to level, truck sits level unloaded and I am very happy.

I also have air bags for support of not bottoming out. I think it handles better with and without the 5er. This has to be better than raising an already top heavy 5er.

It's a good modification.

I love it, the dealer says it will cause severe vibration [dummy]. Sheesh. I've had my spacers out now for about 170,000 miles and I'm still on the original driveline Ujoints. All is well, smooth as glass.

do you think its smoother or the same?
