Lower radiator hose spring ??

Replacing the oe hose after 125k miles. Inside the hose is this spring. What's the purpose of the spring? And should I insert the spring in the new hose?

Upper hose had no spring.

lower hose is on the suction side of the rad, the spring keeps it from collapsing!

Thx! So why don't new hoses include the spring?

FWIW, guy at NAPA said new hoses don't require the spring - really?
