Lights fluctuating
Lights fluctuating
Does anybody know why during cold starts my dash lights fluctuate at about 20 second intervals? Someone told me that the glow plugs cycle and cause a current draw. If this is so, is this normal?
Grid heaters. . makes warm air for the motor during warm up. . . .they draw big current so you enjoy the lights going up and down while they cycle. Picture a toaster or blow dryer in your intake turning on and off. . . .
When I start my truck my lights will come on and then the fass pump goes iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiwwwwwwwwwwww wwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnngggggggggggbbbbbbb booooooooooooooooooooooooo, and that will make my lights dim for a second or two.

Sorry gents, didn't mean to use the wrong terminology. (i.e. glow plugs) I'm still getting used to this whole diesel change of lifestyle.
Deviating from the intended subject of this thread I want to ask any/all of you a couple of other odd ball questions.
1.) What does one use to easily remove the diesel schmeg that forms on my bumper as well as my brand new toy hauler?
and 2.) Aside from going with stacks, which I absolutely don't want to do, any suggestions on how to save my trailer from this obvious demise?

Put a stack on.

Ok, axe that idea. Put a turn-down on. Simple green works great and won't hurt the paint...to my experience. Read the label good first!

There you have it.
gus, please fill out your signature on the user cp page so we know what you are driving. it makes diagnosis easier sometimes.
for info. fords and chevy's use glow plugs(in the cylinders for preheat). the ctd uses a fuel heater in the filter and a grid heater in the intake for preheat. look at the base of the intake horn where it meets the manifold, you will see a 1 1/2" tall block with heavy gauge wires and studs attached to it. that is the grid heater. much more reliable, and easily removable if it fails.
maybe you could patent the tears off for trailers to prevent overfueled(properly fueled) ctd's from discoloring the fronts. you could then get your own lambo.
