Leather steering wheel problem.

I have the leather steering wheel and recently where I rest my hand the most it has started peeling. The leather is coming off in skin thin strips. The bad area in almost the width of my hand.
Anybody else have this problem?

Hi Mexstan,

I have that wheel, but not that problem. Have you cleaned it with anything b4? I rubbed mine with a damp wash cloth and that is it. I was going to put leather conditioner from the 4runner on it, but figured it was probably not really leather anyway. :-

I will keep an eye on mine and let you know if it starts.

Re:Leather steering wheel problem.

The only thing I have ever cleaned it with is a wet rag. No conditioner, no soap, nothing.

Thanks Ed. Only problem is, then I can't drive my truck for a week or so. Am going to see what my dealer can do for me, but this could take a while. Was hoping to have some ammunition with others having the same problem.

Mine is doing the same thing, and I've seen postings of many with the same trouble.

As for the truck-down trouble, why not find a steering wheel from a junk yard and send it in.

I have recovered steering wheels with Wheelskins. They wear like iron and looks good.

I had the same thing happen on my 01 with only about 15000 miles on it. Took it to the dealer and they ordered a new steering wheel and replaced it under warranty.

Re:Leather steering wheel problem.

3 of 'em on ebay right now about 50 bucks. My Ferd had leather steering wheels and they all deteriorated before 50k. I got sick of paying 300 bucks for them so put the standard ones in. Maybe Stan you need some hand lotion to smooth that skin....

I've got leather, it only has 1200 miles on it and I would gladly trade for a brand new standard steering wheel. Leather just never holds up.

ANyone interested, PM me.

Re:Leather steering wheel problem.

On my last truck the finish came of the wheel..looked crappy..they have places to fix it to look new and i've taken other vehicles and was happy with the results..but for this truck i found a decent looking leather wheel cover and it looks good ove top of my wheel..it can take all the abuse this time..sounds like yours might be awarranty problem though..
