Question It's cold and that darn "Owl Hoot" is back!!!

Now that it has finally become good and cold here in NJ, I noticed that "Owl Hoot" noise is back from the carrier bearing on the drive shaft between 20-30mph. I had this thing replaced last year and the noise went away and now 15,000 miles later it's back. I do not want to have to replace this bearing again next winter. What did the dealer do to yours to correct this problem?

Carrier

Sounds like either the carrier bearing is bad, or the u-joint. Personally most of the problems I have only get worse when I go to the dealer. I much rather have to buy the tool, learn how to do it, and fix it myself. Only thing I can't do (yet) is do a 4 wheel alignment, or paint, most other stuff I can fix. Saving up for a scan tool that chyrsler uses (dealer said he could get me one at a resonable price, if my bonus is good, i'm getting one). That would be so nice to get, I could help everybody with a truck. Need high idle, 5 bucks, need this, 10, be cheep, but would help pay for the tool.

Hope you get the noise fixed. Sounds like the bearing is going dry?? I've never had problems with the carrier bearins, and I've even lifted my 98, never one.

They replaced the u-joint in my carrier bearing, got rid of the "hoot owl effect". Hadn't realized it until you said something, but it's not there anymore.

Had my carrier bearing replaced last year...quiet for about 3 weeks.
Going in for 48K KM service...will have them do it again.

That's just a feature! I have heard that sound for three winters but only when it is very cold and only until drive a mile or so. I think every vehicle I have ever had made different noises when cold. The last Dodge with the V10 would squeal the belt for a little bit. I just think it is normal since it goes away pretty quick and I never notice it any other time of the year.

Do a search in the drivetrain forum for hoot owl
