Installed Stacks - now I'm deaf

So I ripped out my dual MBRP exhaust for a MBRP dual stack setup. I reused the straight thru muffler from the cool-dual setup for the stacks and even added a dynaflow (short) straight thru muffler and I still can't hear myself think when driving at around 1900 rpms.

Has anyone done this setup? if so, what muffler have you used???

I heard/read about the magnaflow pro-race series that is straight thru. They come in two different lengths. My guess is go with the longer 20" version.....but will this be enough???

It's against "Man-Law" to run mufflers with stacks and violators could be prosecuted.

Seriously though, I've always thought about plumbing an exhaust diverter for towing or long haul purposes. Divert the exhaust thru a muffler and out a short down pipe towards the rear...just never got around to doing it.

I put a 5"x30" magna flow on my truck when I did the 5" downpipe back and It took the Highs and raspiness out of the exhaust note and also got rid of the drone I had at cruising speed. It will still rip a WOT though.

I have a silverline muffler on my 97 and its not loud at all, I even have the mitre cuts level with the cab so they can't be easily seen from the front of the truck. You can turn a straight through muffler around and one way is supposed to be quieter than the other.

I was thinking about the same concept. I remember seeing something in JC Whitney some time ago about a diverter with a cable that can to the driver. This is what gave me the idea. Great concept....just don't think it would lend itself to a diesel with a 4" diverter pipe! Design would have to be cleaner then what JC Whitney sold also!

Stacks are 5" diameter with a 45 bevel cut. They sit about 4 - 6 inches above the top of the cab.

The drone at 1900 is pretty bad!!! Runs sweet at 2300 though. Problem is I can't tow what I tow at that speed! 1900 and 65-68 is the sweet spot.

I've got the 4" so I'll need to go with # 12773 which is 4" x 30" case length.

Sad part is whatever I do it will probably remove the burble and turbo whine which I love!

Installed the magnaflow today and what a difference! Still got that deep tone but the rasphyness (is that even a word????) is gone and the dreaded drone at 1900 is pretty much gone.

Loving the stacks now!!!

I just intalled MBRP Smokers on my 03 qc / lb two days ago.

first of all, there is only one stock hanger/bushing being used in the kit. its on the downpipe. From there, ther is a long extension pipe, then flex pipe, then to the 90 up into the box. I Installed 6" x 36" mitre cuts (about 3" taller than cab)

Ive got to tell you...the noise is OBNOXIOUS! The back window vibrates to beat all hell. At 1500 rpm, the dash shakes violently. Under WOT, my fillings come loose !!!

Needless to say, it been 2 days, and they are coming OUT on Saturday! Look great.....but way too obnoxious! Anyone interested in a set for 03-04 QC..let me know...ill sell them CHEAP! anyone else with same problem?

I used an Aero Turbine 5050XL (w/built in resonator) underneath on my 6" Miter Cut stack install. The 6" pipe is all the way from bed to even with roof.

Mine is pretty loud accelerating in the cab, but does calm down at pretty much any cruising speed to acceptable level. Sound is great and no drone when you finally get to crusing speed.

BTW you can listen to mine from the bed at least in this video. I do believe that mine has quieted down after a couple weeks of operation. Maybe soot buildup, maybe everything just settled in to a comfortable non binding location or maybe I am just getting harder of hearing than I was. (lol) But it seems to be fairly quiet now cruising, radio normal volume and no problems talking to someone. Now towing might be irritating with my laggy turbo, but that is another story.

Nice Vid By4! very nice sound and something i could live with..

This noise was a two part problem....

#1 was obnoxious vibration in the bed and back window. That is now solved. The 90 degree pipe from the bed was within 1/4 of a stock anger and making contact at medium to hard throttle...hanger finger bent out of the way a bit.

#2 fornt downpipe vibrates entire dash at 1500 rpm. Beinth the is only one hanger on the front pipe, which fits very loosly on the stock mount, i think im going to have to find a way to make a rubber grommet mounted hanger. any ideas? and thanks for the help in advance!

2500WHITERAM,

Well mine is plumbed so tight underneath I did not use any other brackets than the one after the down pipe. But my stack is bolted top and botton to the bed and the 90 going into the adapter for the stack is welded. Everything is clamped tight and really has no way to move much. The only give is the foot of flex pipe that should absorb any movement if frame/bed articulates in off road type conditions. I will have to cut something if I want to take it off.

Here is a picture of the plumbing.

You do need to find a way to add brackets so that there is no vibration under normal driving. I certainly had some help from Michael at HotRodDiesels to finish and the plumbing underneath.

Good luck, I am happy with mine. It is loud at times, but normal driving is ok.

BTW, don't use small tools inside a stack. But that SNAFU is whole different story. Maybe I'll post the fun I had getting a pair of pliers out of mine today.
