I shoulda got a Hemi!

File this under strange but true. Yesterday afternoon, while washing my truck, a green Ram 1500 Quadcab 4x4 pulled up next to me. As we all do, I quickly looked for the fender badge, saw it was a Hemi. Nice looking truck.

The driver hopped out, looked my truck over, and asked me how I liked my Cummins. I told him I'm pretty happy with it, indicating it has excellent power and tows great. He then told me that he thought about getting a Cummins also, but he heard they usually last only about 25000-30000 miles before they "blow-up"!! I laughed out loud at that, thinking he was either joking, or he meant to say 250000-300000 miles, but apparently he was serious. He mentioned that he's heard that from a "buncha guys that have them". He then told me that he got the Hemi because it's the most powerful engine anyone makes, and it's the best motor you can get for towing. At this point, I realized it just wasn't worth the time to straighten this Yahoo out, so I figured I'd just try to wrap up our conversation and get on with washing my truck, so I told him I hoped I'd get lucky and my truck wouldn't blow up at 30k, and I went back to washing my truck.

He wasn't quite done yet, he wanted to know what kind of fuel mileage I get with the Cummins. I figured I'd inflate my response a little to see his reaction, and told him about 25 mpg on the higway while towing, and a little more around town. I asked him how the Hemi does on fuel, he quickly responded that it's about the same. I told him he must've got a good one, hopped in my truck, and left before any of his stupid rubbed off on me.

I have heard of Hemi owners being blasted on other forums because of for their arrogant attitudes an unrealistic performance claims, but I was truly amused by this guy and his story. Don't get me wrong, as gas motors go the Hemi is a good one, but I have to wonder, does Dodge pre-screen potential Hemi owners for brain damage prior to purchase, or do they offer coupons for frontal lobotomies in lieu of rebates?

A little off topic, but when I had a 99 Dakota, I thought the same about the Dakota RT owners, well I actually still do.

Yeah, I read alot about these yahoo's beating SVT Mustangs, Vett's, and 350Z's by just installing a CAI or even stock for that matter. Milage claims in the 19-22 range. Now don't get me wrong, the HEMI is a nice engine and could use some tweeking, but it is a 5K lb truck. I liked mine and I never saw that milage and I could run with the fellas, but I wasn't even close to taking out any of mentioned sport cars. But, heh, if there happy with it and have snot running out of their noses, it don't hurt anyone. Now, this one time in band camp.....

Going West over the Sierras (Hwy 80) a couple months ago pulling my travel trailer, I pulled through the fruit inspection station about the same time as a Hemi (also pulling a trailer, about the same size as mine). He took me off the line, but once we started climbing, the "contest" ended. I left him rather quickly

I'm afraid that stupidity (probably more ignorance in this case) is not limited to hemi owners. I was fueling up yesterday next to an 04 CTD 2500 owner. We chatted about mileage and such and I asked if his was an HO or SO. He told me it was an SO and informed me that the HO was not available in CA unless you brought it in from out of state. This may have been the case when he bought his, but he remained wary when I told him about the 50 state 325/600 engine. To make matters worse, he told me to watch out for the Fords because they just bought Cummins and they would be putting them into all the Fords next year.

I wonder if the Cummins equipped Fords will be scheduled to blow up at 30000 miles also. I just hope my Hemi buddy is around to give me a ride home when my Cummins explodes.

Honestly, there are so many ignorant people out there. Cummins owners, Dodge, Ford, Chevy, whatever. I ran into 1 guy the other day with a 3rd gen 6spd who instead of using the boost elbow with his Edge EZ, he purposely plugged the line so that his wastegate is inoperative and he runs 45+PSI of boost on stock turbo. He said this gave him +30 HP over the Edge EZ.

Well, I ran into this guy one day filling up. He was driving a Excursion 4X4 PSD. He claimed he had 475 Hp stock and got 25-28 Mpg. He was about 70 years old so I let him off easy. Must have been Alzhiemers!!!

Hemi guys are funny... I've gotten a couple to run me on the highway, but most of the time they seem too skeered to play... I guess the gauges and the 5" straight pipe makes most of them tuck their tail a little?

You have all seen the commericals with the "burger boys" dreaming about a Dodge Hemi. The commercials came true! The "burger boys" really end up with a Dodge Hemi! You ran into one of them! LOL

There are "know it alls" in any situation. They hear a 1/2 truth and run with it as the gospal. It takes all kinds.

The amount of misinformation out there is unbelievable some times.

I was talking to my friend's dad last week who was swearing up and down that the new Rams have an Allison transmission in them.

I've heard it all. The area I come from is extremely Ford biased. Seems like everyone has a friend/brother/cousin that's had a Dodge die at 10,000 miles
