Talking I cant believe it...I didnt get taxed when I bought a used truck out of state.

Hey I flew out to Texas 2 years ago to buy my current CTD. Well I never got around to getting it registered in CA until I got a reg ticket.

I waited 2 years because I thought I was going to get hit with sales tax on a $25K truck plus all the other fee's

Well to my suprise I didnt have to pay the DMV sales tax and estimated $3-4K. Only $800 the majority beeing late fees.

I've had to pay taxes to the DMV on all my other cars/truck I bought. Is it because it was out of state?????

I dont have to pay for weight fee's ever again and my registration should be around $100 a year because im dissabled.

If I would of knowen how cheap it was going to be I would of done it 2 years ago and probably walked out for under $100.

I dont think they made a mistake since I went in there 2 different day's and talked to 2 different workers.

How did this happen and could it be repeated?

as far as i know, you're supposed to have to pay state sales tax, to the state where you live, at your cities' tax rate. if it didn't work like that, everyone would just buy their trucks out of state, or from a city with the lowest tax rates. you might have just been lucky enough to have fallen through the cracks, maybe because you waited so long to register in ca.

They make mistakes, but my experience has been, sooner or later, they find it. Good luck

WOW-3 to 4 grand to register a $30k vehicle! Dang! In NM we pay 3% sales tax on the price of the vehicle, purchased in or out of state.

So the key to avoiding taxes is to buy in TX wait a few years before you register?

It feels good to be lucky

When I lived in CA I think the time limit was 3 months. After that you could bring it in w/o paying sales tax.

They made a mistake. They should have used the date you brought the truck into the state to calculate the taxes, not the date you registered it. As others have said, if it was as easy as what happened to you in this case, everyone would do it.

It's not that tough to do with Texas. Last I knew, plates stay with vehicles in Texas, not owners. Is it still the same?

Been doing this for years. I am a Montana resident and I purchased all my vehicles in NC, CA or CO. All I tell them is I am visiting from out of state. I get a 30 day temp and I am out the door with no STATE sales tax. Saves me about 2-3K every time I buy a truck. All I have to do is send in the bill of sale to MT DMV and I get my plates in the mail.

Paid $1500 in taxes when I bought my texas truck and brought it into CA. Registering that truck was the biggest pain I have ever dealt with in my entire life. No hyperbole, either. Took me 6 months to get it registered....

That truck tought me a very valuable lesson: I will never buy a vehicle from Texas again.

Well, the used truck I bought didnt have plates on it and when I was at DMV they asked me to surrender the old plates. I had to repeat myself three times "The truck didnt come with any plates, Lady".
