Hub Rattle?
Getting a slight/quick "rattle" in what sounds like the front driver's side hub when I hit any mid-sized to moderate bump at highway speeds...
The truck drives great (no play in steering, Death wobble, or alighnment issues, etc...). And outside of the of the "rattle" that I hear in the hub/wheel area you wouldn't think or know anyting is wrong. Truck's got right at 88K on it now...that said, I know I'm going to be due some front end maintinance as I hit the 100K mark. But just curius if you guys had any suggestions on what this "rattle" could be? Thanks in advance for the feedback! |
It looks like you are still running stock wheels (in your avatar). I know certain aftermarket wheels have center caps that always seem to rattle. You could always take your center caps off and go for a test drive to rule them out.

Yeah...still running the stockers. Good suggestion. It could be that simple (hopefully). Appreciate the look!

Could be your brake calipers. Mine do the same thing but I havent checked my calipers yet.

I guess I'm gonna have to jack up the front, take the tire off and just beat around that general area with a rubber mallot and see if I can find the culprit. |
On my old truck, I always heard a similar noise when going over speedbumps slowly. A long time later I found a couple handfulls of gravel and a 9/16" end wrench inside of the spare tire whe I lowered it. Ah, the joys, of buying a used truck... It took me forever to find that noise!

At this point it's more frustrating than a major concern...but yeah, I hear ya'! That would be my luck as well...something totally unexpected!

I had similar sound and it turned out to be front sway bar. The bushing on the frame was worn.

Well...just as a follow-up, I had the truck looked at this morning at it's a front hub replacement that's needed. With parts and labour it sounds like it's about a $400 fix...that sound like a fair pricde for those that may know?
|
Sounds cheap actually. How are your upper and lower ball joints and your u-joints? Cause if it's all torn apart now is the time to do them instead of paying for the labor again. And do you want the same stock unit hubs that have failed you once already???
I paid $400 for labor to install new upper and lower ball joints, new u-joints, and new DynaTrac hubs. Of course the cost of my parts was $$$. on edit - just so you know, my u-joints were totally rusted... no grease left. Only rusted powdered bearings. And my ball joints were gone as well as my unit hubs and I have 86,000 miles. |
my front rattles bad just took off the front hub cap . will test drive in 45min. to see whats up. doing vb i hope on tuesday.
