My 2006 5.9 owners manual says change the fuel filter every 15,000 miles. How often are you changing yours and why?

My dealer says every 10k. It really depends on the quality of fule you are able to get consistanly and how you drive. Be sure to use the 7micron or better filter, too.

I think when the truck is new , at least with mine there was a lot of dirt in the new tank that got trapped in the filter , so the first time I would change it early , maybe around 2500 . The manual say's to drain the filter after each fill up to get the water out of system , but most do not , me included . I change mine in the spring and fall because of the temperature change and condensation caused by it . The filter system on these trucks in my opinion is inadequate and should be up dated , a goal of mine down the road . 10000 miles sounds like a good number to me but like said a lot will depend on the quality of the fuel you purchase . At the price per gallon now how could it be anything but clean , ya right .

 

I change mine every other oil change. I also try to time it so I put a fresh one on in fall so I have a clean filter for the winter. This helps prevent filter clogging from winter gelling issues.

 

Dodge changed and updated the fuel filter interval. It used to be 15,000 but now they tell you to do it every 10,000. I did mine at 10,000 and could tell a big difference in performance afterwards which surprised me. I think I'm gonna change them every 5k when I do the oil from now on. It's only a 5 minute job and the filters are cheap. Like somebody else said use 7 micron or better filter.

 

I've changed mine about once a year or so. It turns out to be about 30,000 miles between changes. As long as it's not clogged it works just fine. The changes were done partly because I was working on the fuel system installing the Walbro or I felt it had been a long time and was checking for algae.

In theory you could get one clogged immediately with a bad load of fuel and with clean dry fuel you could go for many years without problems. Checking the separator for water is a good idea, and if you see some, change the filter. If the truck sits a lot, algae could develop and require changes at fewer miles than if it never sits. So, changing at a certain mileage interval is something that works pretty well for everyone, on average and, in most cases, is more often than needed. I did have one clog on my first gen and it was a hassle to find one that day and where I was. So carrying a spare is a good idea, and maybe better than just changing it often because you could get some bad fuel and have to change it unexpectadly.

30k before the first change just recently - per owner's manual that is within specs.

 

Once a year or 15k which ever comes first.Usually once a year.I drain mine just about every fillup and have on all my diesel stuff in the past.

 

I change my cannister filter (7-micron) every other oil change and after every long trip somewhere (3-4K or more). If I have any rough idling or white smoke I will also change it at that time, usually ends the problem. I try to check/drain the cannister once a week, kind of goes with washing, cleaning the interior, lube points, etc.

I changed the 10 micon filters a 15,000 miles. I now change the 7 micron filters at 10,000 miles.

good info guys......any other tips for a new 5.9 owner? I had a 7.3 Power Stroke Ford and when I bought that they gave you a video tape that went over all the little tid bits of diesel ownership.....good info for a guy that had never had a diesel truck before.....now I'm back to diesel and hoping for better results with the Dodge...my Ford 7.3 blew up at 52k miles...they blamed it on the aftermarket air intake and exhaust system...

 

I change my oil and fuel filter every 10k, keeps it simple.
