How to: Block heater cord install

Evenin, DTR...

Since I did it tonight, I took some pics. As far as I know, the block heater is standard, but the plug is not. I got my plug from a Cummins shop, but you can get them from geno's too. It's a lot cheaper than the Dodge parts dept...

Remember, safety... watch the battery terminals, and if you take the intake off, watch the turbo fins and make sure nothing is left over to get sucked into the turbo...

First: Remove the intake.

Behind the oil filter and under the manifold is a plastic cap.

Take it off.

Inspect the plug to make sure that the ground strap is not bent up, and that there is no debris in the plug.

Install the plug. Make sure that it seats tightly. I would reccomend some anti-seize on the threads.

Tighten the nut.

Then, drop the cord down and route it to the bumper. I tie mine up with zip ties. Watch for sharp edges, and make sure to keep it off the rad.

And I zip tie mine to the tow hook.

I would also reccomend putting some anti-seize on the plastic cap when/if you reinstall it next year...

Thanks for taking the extra time to do this. I have been curious about this for a while just never needed it bad enough to do it.

Are you supposed to remove the cord in the summer or is it a permanent install?

TIA

Permanent install. Pics in my gallery of what I did to relocate it. I don't have that cord hanging around now.
Nice write-up

You can remove it in the summer, I do, but you don't have to.

Thanks, Sir!

Is that a mopar plug?

The one I got had a different end on it, and has the little plastic clips that go in existing holes in the frame to route the cord.

I leave mine in year round, but I just tuck the cord behind the bumper during the summer, then move it underneath where the foglights are during the winter...

Got it from the cummins dealer in North Charleston.

Block heaters are great!!!!!

I love my block heater. I use it all the time. If I do not use mine it takes 20 miles for the heater to blown hot air. If I plug it in within 2 miles I get hot air. The best $20.00 Bucks I ever spent. I want to get the cold front but I don't think I need it here in Virginia. Any opinions?

my question , what kind of camera do you have, and what were the settings? those pics are really clear

madhat 11-19-2008 09:29 AM

It's a Sony cybershot DSC-W80, and I had the resoultion turned all the way up... 7.2 mega pixels, then I load them on photobucket so I can use the full size pics here.

It's a great camera, and I love it. I got it for 189.99...

I can get them pretty cheap at the exchange.
