help...oil on the driveway!

Well, for the past few days there has been a small puddle of motor oil dripping from somewhere under the truck. Well, I got under there today and saw that the oil was collecting on the front U-joint (coming out of the transfer case). Also, looking at the under side of the truck I could see that oil has been getting flung all over the place. Anyone have any ideas? I cannot see the oil running down from anywhere else. Just take it to the dealer and let them worry about it? It is under an extended warranty. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Nick

There is some sort of "vent hose" below the fuel filter that keeps the back of the oil pan and the transmission flywheel access plate well lubricated on mine. It doesn't actually drip in the driveway but blows enough oil vapor to make things grimey. I hope that's all it is, but it sounds like you have something else going on.

I am a little confused. When you say it is comming out of transfer case onto the front U joint. Is it on the rear drive shaft front u joint or the rear u joint on the front drive shaft? I have a leak in the companion seal on the rear drive shaft. It is easy tell because the oil stain is on the back of the large dougnut and on the u joint. If it is in front of the doughnut, than the transfer case seal is bad. I am out of warranty, so I have a complete shaft ordered. The cost shuld be about $225.00 delivered.

Sorry..I am an idiot.

The oil is collecting on the front u-joint (after the donut) on the driveshaft between the xfer case and the rear end.

Check your oil level. If it is too full oil will be expelled through the vent tube. Extend your vent hose into a vented bottle or past the engine compartment.

iIf it is red, I would bet my next meal that you have the leaking companion seal. That should be covered under the 7/70 warranty. There is a vent hose on the transfercase, I checked mine and it was fine. The others are talking about the engine vent hose. That is engine oil. It makes quite amess, but it is black, not red.
