Help I can't decide on tires! Open County vs BFG
I was at my local Les Schwab looking at Open Country All terrain 285 70 17s to replace my factory Michelin LTXs (stock 265s). I would like a little bigger tire, and the Open Countys are about $850 out the door for four tires. They also have a new-used set of BFG All terrian KO 315 70 17s (new tires, customer did not like them) for $500. I hadn't really thought of going with that big of a tire; would I need a front space kit? what do you guys think, 285 Open County or go bigger and get the 315 BFGs? As far as cost goes I need to factor in the cost of the front spacers. Do they cause the Wobble?
i have thier MTs on my truck. The 315 ATs are "D" rated, not spec but the weight rating is up there with a "E". Not sure on the load rating on the Open Country.
As for the rub, yes they typically rub the control arms with stock wheels. Only at full lock. I ran this way for a year or so, no ill effect.
Spacers, not a bad way to go. Helps out on the rubbing, looks good as well. I bet they will put them on and you still will be under the price of the Open Countrys.
Death wobble, many people have stated it with the BFG. I think it is vehicle specific. I have never had a problem.
Lastly, I think 35's are the correct size for these trucks. They just look right.

Personally, I think the 315's are a little to big and my rob some power. Many on this forum have said that 315's on a stock suspension will rub.
I am really happy so far with my BFG 285 at's. Wearing well so far, and ride great. My 2 cents.

I recently had bfg 315's installed at stock level with no rubbing. I have the steel wheels with chrome covers. I think they look great. One of my neighbors commented: "Now it looks like a truck instead of a railroad car with the tires that you had before." I had 265's.
Noticed a little lag, but not much. After a couple of days it seemed like normal. I do drive around town and anytime under about 50 mpr with tow/haul button on now. But, I do have the bed full of work supplies. I adjusted my tone ring and now it seems to have more low end than before.
I would go with the 315's if they are in good shape. I paid just over a grand out the door.

I have 315 TKO's on my truck and love them. I also have an aftermarket torque converter that is tighter than stock. I've been over 100mph on mine and was amazed how smooth they were. I believe the reason is that size was specifically developed for the Hummer H2. I've had other BFG's before and was never impressed with the ride.

I had the bfg 315's on my truck. Never really liked them. I got 31,000 miles out of them, which I was not impressed with. My new tires are Toyo Open Country AT 325/70/17. I've only got 500 miles on them, but I like them a lot. Tire just looks and performs better IMO. I hope I can get 50,000 out of this set. It's just to dang expensive to have to buy tires every year and a half. I have the Kore Recon and get a little rub, but these tires are 13 inches wide.
i also have the bfg's 285's. they have 35,000 miles on them and are wearing perfect. this is my fifth set of bfg ta/ko's.(various sizes) i have never had a problem with these tires. they are the only tire i'll buy!
Man did I get a great deal on my second set of BFG 285's. Discount Tire in Grapevine, TX 729 out the door! The manager was desperate for a sale and knocked them down for me. I just stopped to do a rotate and asked them how much these tires cost now and he priced it for me. The real kicker is this, I had a 1500 I had these on and took them off and put them on the new 2500. When I did this, the 1500 had 16K on them. Well, my 2500 showed 32K and what he did since the tire is guarenteed for 50k he pro rated the difference and gave me credit on the new ones. So I took the offer. Great business and a happy customer. The original set I bought from the same place so they had my record from the past purchase made it easier too.
I had 285 BFG a/t's on my ferd and liked them, went with the toyo open country's on the new dodge and like them, work well on snow and ice. They are both very good tires i personally like the looks of bfg's but for the price difference i went with the toyos. Only complaint is they pick up some big rocks and throw them all over the place.

That particular BFG tire in the 315 size is OFTEN associated with "death wobble".
I'd consider either the 285 BFG, or go with a different brand in the 285 or 315 size.
